Filled out a credit card, no annual fee, application and gave it to the nice lady at special services at Sherwood, OR Home Depot. Came away with a free blue Mini Maglite with batteries, holster, 2 extra lenses and a squared-off rubber (slip-on) thing for the business end of the flashlight (keeps it from rolling and a shock absorber). There were other "gifts" but this was my choice.

Bargain tip of the day my friends.

Now off to WM for the led kit.

Best,

I am sorry, but I don't regard getting a trinket like a mini-mag or a T-shirt in exchange for an extra credit card that I don't need a good deal. I would bet that in 10 years you won't either. Having one less credit inquiry and the 10 minutes to fill out the form is worth more than the $8 the flashlight would have cost me.

I've heard that applying for new lines of credit could potentially damage your credit score. I don't think that a Mag-Lite, no matter how nice it is, is worth messing with your credit rating.

And just what are you doing at the Sherwood, Oregon Home Depot?

I work at the local Home Depot here in Santa Clarita and AFAIK, they were giving out RYOBI tool sets...:p

Keep the Mini Maglite.:D

Gollnick,

I was pleased to see your name on the leading "readers respond" article in this month's (March) Blade. Well written, informative, helpful and straight-forward problem solving. Thank you. Looking forward to more.

All the best,

oregon, who lives near Sherwood

It is one of those weird things in our modern world, but all these outfits want you to use their proprierty credit cards (so they can rake in all that credit card interest!), but havng credit cards that you don't need can result in screwing up your credit!

The short explanation is that you end up with what they call"unsecured credit." This means that you can have a perfect credit background, have paid off any loans and lines of credit on time, etc., but if you have other credit lines, you can, in theory, run up thousands of dollars tomorrow. And maybe, if you are a devius person, not pay any of it off.

At least, that is the way credit folks look at you when you apply for a new loan. Like try to buy a car or a house.

So, best advice is to walk on by all those offers unless you absolutely need and intend to use that new credit card.

As to the "free" flashlite, t-shirt, or whatever they are offering, remember: those folks are not giving ANYTHING away for free!!!

We just recently did a promotion (well, a promoter did a promotion, he just used us for the pizzas) where you sign up for a credit card and you get a free pizza. He littered the University with fliers. I couldn't believe how many people showed up. Kinda pathetic, really...
