This may be getting too far off the subject of knives, but I am curious if anyone has had a similar experience as myself with those "free sample" razors one gets in the mail. The last time I got one, I was very impressed with the quality. Not only did it give a good shave, but it seemed the blade would never wear out. When it finally did, I bought some replacement blades. Guess what, they didn't last nearly as long as that first sample blade! Could it be I was tricked with a sample that was far better than the regular production blade?

Could be. Do yourself a favor and buy a straight razor from a reputable firm. If the razor begins to feel dull, you can only blame your own sharpening skills, like I do... ;)
Besides, it's a special feeling using a shaving mug, shaving brush and a straight razor. The stuff that worked a hundred years ago still works, even better than some of today's safety razors (Mach 3 etc). Where is development heading...?

I've used disposable Schick razors for years, and I've been pretty pleased with them. The grip is firm, the blades are very sharp out of the package, and I get quite a few shaves out of a single razor.

Recently I switched to a Wahl electric because I was tired of the hassle of shaving cream, but it's too soon yet to know if it was a mistake to switch from blades.

Ditto on the good quality twin-bladed disposables. Buy the 10 pack or 25 pack if you can find em. You get at least a few good shave out of em. Electrics= ingrown hairs. And straight razors are just another time eating hobby. I've tried the straight razors but when my barber shaves me via straight razor it lasts like 3 days clean. By myself or with any other razor (twin blade disp, mach 3 e.t.c.) its still every day and it sucks.
