I've started to produce some very special steel, and would like to let some folks try it out for themselves, so the first 5 people who meet the requirements (read below) and Email me will get a bar of the stuff for free, it will ship sometime next week. The reason I'm doing this is to get feedback from other makers.

Requirements and conditions:

1 You are a knife maker in good standing either here or on another recognized forum (Don fogg's forum, primal fires etc.) (let me know what forums you post on in your Email)

2 You post with some regularity

3 You have made at least 50 knives by your own account (I'll take your word for this if you meet the previous requirements) You don't need to forge to participate, but I want at least 2 or 3 folks who do, the bars are roughly 1/4" by 1 3/8" by 12", so you can get a lot more knife out of it if you forge.

4 You agree to complete a quality knife using the steel in a timely fashion (within 1 month roughly) using the heat treat instructions included (simple heat treat, no controled furnace required) I will send a smaller piece along as well for heat treat practice and experimentation

5 You agree to Email me with any questions or problems regarding the steel, and post your thoughts on the steel and pictures of the finished knife on at least 1 forum, crediting the steel as what I provided.

I won't talk much more about this steel here, not yet anyways, so please email me with the heading "free steel" and I will give you more information.

This offer is on a first come first served basis, as well as the honor system, if you tell me you meet the criteria, I'll believe you, and if you tell me youll have the knife done in a month, I'll believe you, but I'll also be posting a list of who I've shipped the steel to either here or on my website.

If you don't meet the requirements but want to know more anyways, please email me, I will answer questions that way.

Just passing through and this caught my attention, would love to see what comes of this. You have my interest in the results. :) Lookin' forward to see who the five are :cool:

Response has been great, I've got to sort through the emails and get back to everyone, I should be able to do that this evening, in the mean time;

The steel is a carbon steel, and should HT roughly like 1090 but but is a little stiffer than 52100 under the hammer, but the real treat is in the Pattern And No it isn't damascus :)

More info will be on the way to everyone who's emailed me, I should be home and have time to write back to everyone between 7 and 8 tonight. So be patient.

Sounds like wootz or a dendritic cast steel to me! You'll have to clue us in to what you've been up to this Saturday Tony.
 
Not wootz or dendritic steel either :) thanks for asking. I should have a piece there saturday for examination.

Off again, I've got to make 2 more trips before I can sit down and reply to all the emails, be back in about 2-3 hours

After following the other thread over on Fogg's forum.... I know it would be a great project to be part of.

But there's no way in hell I could get to it in a month.

Jeez, Maybe I'm missing something, I didn't know there ws a thread about this over there yet.... Oh well :)

I understand the time constraints too, it'll be hard for me to do the same thing I'm asking you guys to do.

According to the metalurgist, the steel is most definitly in the "dog Poo" class of steels not the "cat poo" class of steels. :p

I'm just sitting down at the computer now guys, emails are on the way starting with the earliest recieved ones.

At This point 16 people who are qualified have Emailed me, and I'm working on figuring out if I can give away more than 5 pieces.... I may have some smaller pieces that I can give to the late comers, just don't know if I have enough of the larger pieces.....

If I haven't sent you am Email yet, don't worry, I'm in the process of sorting still, and there's a good chance you'll be included in the list.
