Jerry said that the supply is or has run out and that no manufacturer could match the original SnakeSkin Micarta.

So what did the attempts at matching it look like? I mean it wouldn't have to be a perfect match. Close would be good for me.

And I understand that Jerry is a perfectionist, his knives prove that, so if the attempts to match SnakeSkin weren't perfect then there would be no more SnakeSkin. Understandable.

But the attempts had to look like something. Well what did they look like? If it was anything like SnakeSkin then it would be good. And you wouldn't have to name it SnakeSkin. Name it something else. You could just name it, "The second badest A$$ micarta colour that Busse has ever put on a knife!"

I mean it would be right there on the order form:

1. Black

2. Tan

3. "The second Badest A$$ micarta colour the Busse has ever put on a knife"

4. Black G10

5. TigerHide

Just because the attempted matches didn't match it perfectly doesn't mean that they shouldn't have their chance at fame.

Don't punish the attempts Jerry!

FREE THE ATTEMPTS!

I thought Tiger Hide was an attempt. It looks similar, just not quite right.

Even some of the later snakeskin that was used looks very different from the earlier stuff, colours aren't as well defined and crisp...

I would think the snakeskin that is on the Snakeskin Culti would be an example of 'an attempt'. It looks nothing like the snakeskin on my Custom Shop Active Duty.

Come to think of it, I can think of at least 4 different 'flavors' of snakeskin. Here are four different models that have the four different flavors:

-Custom Shop Active Duty
-DC Snakeskin MOASH
-ABA LE (also Groove Master and Air Rescue snakes)
-Snakeskin Culti

By the way, I've ranked them in order of how good they look (best to worst), IMO.

Then again, I could be all wrong and it's just a matter of how they are cut/machined that makes them look so different. But I'd still guess there are at least 3 different 'flavors' that came out of the shop.

I almost forgot I had this on my webspace:

Three different flavours of snakeskin. To be fair, the Off Duty might just be different due to the way it's cut, as the colours are still rather bright and crisp, just in a different pattern.

Don't forget the Satin Jack Tacs and Badger Attack Tacs.

I'm honestly thinking that the AD pictured has the same batch nof SS micarta as the two FSH pictured. Just ground/shaped different

I think I could replicate snakeskin with the right color fabric.
Now I don't think I could make it fast enough to fill orders unless Jerry gave me a full time job, if he wants to give a 16yo a full time job. :D
Plus I need one of you guys to send me a few samples for study. ;)

Perhaps the difficulty in making Snakeskin Micarta is consistency. Versus every other canvas micarta, it seems to have a TON of resin, not much canvas. Perhaps layering is difficult at that point and it comes out too wavy even though people THINK they can make it.

IIRC, VTN made some micarta and did a snakey-style mix. But it came out wavy. Not that wavy is bad, but the consistency of Snakeskin makes it . . . look like snakeskin.

Seems to me like the "thing" about skin is the texture of the fabric used. It seems visibily different other forms of micarta I've seen. The differences in terms of color and sheen, I believe, is in the grinds. The snakeskin culties look very much like the skin on U_J's crazy SJLE, and that knife was made LONG before the culties came out. I'm sure Dave'll post a pic when he wakes up and sees this thread.

UJ can answer this definitively, but I thought Garth rehandled that knife recently. I thought the original Satin Jack LE's were black paper micarta.

This is the last bit of Snakeskin I have from my original FBM CG purchase directly from Busse Combat. I guess it depends on the pattern cut into it but it doesn't look as 'Red' as some of the later Snakeskin.

Hey, Whats going on guys :)

Well , for one I know snakeskin was only used in canvas micarta.... I always wanted to see it in linen but that is just non existent. :(

I believe all the snakeskin made was the same but different batches which yielded slightly different vibrancy. This is also the case with green linen and tan. The manner in which the snakeskin slabs are machined also makes a big difference in appearance because of how the layers are cut.

My SnakeSkin Satin Jack LE was unique because the snakeskin slabs were hand shaped by Garth.. I believe the slabs started out as rope pattern until modded. Snakeskin on the Satin Jack LE was not even an option so that means the blade was sent in a few years after the initial release of the SJ. That would make sense because Garth did not even work for Busse when the SJ was first released.

Also, I was informed that Busse experimented with a sealant of some type on the snakeskin for the TankerA ... This produces less vibrancy but shiny finish..

You can notice a difference between an unsealed rope pattern...
