Just so y'all know were freezing here, but we're OK. Fiddleback Forge is north of the city, not in the messiest part. As you know, our crew is big on self sufficiency, so we were prepared. Really its the untrained Atlanta drivers that caused the mess. They ride their breaks, going walking speed down the hills, slipping and sliding then they stop at the bottom of a hill to 'think it over' and then find they cant get up the other side. Did you know that Atlanta is the #1 city for kindness and manners. That actually translates to quite a few unnecessary traffic problems even when its not snowing. This week they drove too slow, and everyone got stuck.

Also an FYI. While I did give the crew the day off yesterday, Ken and I worked, and the batch is right on schedule. This crew, and these people are tough. Its 8 degrees this am, and we'll be working this batch in an unheated shop, as always!

i was on the phone w/ my wife & she saw cussin out the lady in front of her for going too slowly up the hills and not maintaining her momentum. the lady infront of her kept sliding around. as you know there a quite a few from 400 to the mall of ga on 20.

I was going to give you a hard time until I read unheated shop. 8 degrees is a somewhat warm day up here in Northern Vermont!

Man, you guys are hardcore! I don't think my city slicker, Cali butt would last out there.

Keep it up guys. All storms pass eventually.

So much for Hotlanta!

Glad to know you guys are pushing through. . .We've had snow on the ground since Thanksgiving and highs below 8 for most of the month.

Spring is coming. . . .

And Wal-Mart is sold out of portable space heaters. My Father was self employed for 33 yrs. He would always say, 'one of downsides of being self employed - if you dont work, you dont get paid.' ;)

Glad to hear all is well. Just remember that all this snow and cold will end shortly. Stay safe in the mean time.

Glad to hear you guys are ok, and props for still showing up to grind this week's run! I've been on the road all week but my wife said that where we're at in VA has been seeing single digits daily. Stay safe & stay warm!

I have to second that. Here in southern california, it still feels like fall or spring. Hard to believe it's winter. Stay safe and keep warm!

Stay warm in the shop. Might be one of the few times you wished you had a forge.

I wonder if the knives from last week are in a mail truck stuck on the highway. I hadn't thought about it until I saw the mailman go by without dropping off the knife I was hoping for. Waiting an extra day or two is fine by me, just good to hear you guys are all safe.

It has been a bit of a nutty week. Being from the Northeast it was interesting to watch this storm play out. I have to say that an ice storm like this would cripple any area if the roads aren't treated with salt and/or sand (which they were not here). Add to that the drivers down here are polite as Andy mentioned, and have zero idea how to handle driving on ice.

In any event, we pulled a real nice batch out this week, largely at the expense of answering any emails or communicating with the outside world at all. So... if you were looking for a question to be answered this week and it wasn't that is why.

Shipping from last week's batch went out on Tuesday as the storm was rolling in, so my guess is there will be a delay in there for some folks.

And yes, the shop is cold. The other day I asked Andy, "what is the little white box on the wall, with up and down arrow buttons, looks like a thermostat?" He said, "you mean the heater? I'm afraid to use it because of all the metal and wood dust in the air. One open spark and the whole shop could blow up. So you choose... heat or maybe exploding."

Hang in there Ken! Everyone appreciates you guys manning up this week and braving the elements to deliver another awesome batch. I just got home from being away for the past 3 weeks and am amazed how cold it is here in VA! Glad to hear you guys are surviving down there.

Cheers,

Will

Ken,
Watch those flash fires! I have gas water heat and furnace so I avoid anything that vaporizes in the basement. Have to do expoy/oil based finishes outdoors which means awaiting for warm weather. Makes me miss working in a drafty old grainery.

Stay safe first and keep cranking out knives second ;)

Bill

You guys need nuisance hoods to vac all that goodness out of the air. The one I have here at work for powder whey is huge, loud and obnoxious, but better that than blowing up, plus it's efficient enough that no respirators or masks are needed.

Glad to hear you guys are well. A guy slipped on a patch of ice a few weeks back. Ice! On the ground! I can't say I've seen that before. We even had water dropping from the sky yesterday. Seriously, it was the weirdest thing.

Could be the beginning of the end. :p
