Frequent rust spots on CS Voyager

I don't have any cold steel knives, but I generally apply marine tuf-glide to all my folders. It's supposed to leave some protection even when wiped off. I still had my Paramilitary 2 develop some rust after a period of storage, but with the protection the rust was so superficial that I could wipe it off with a paper towel. The thing that prompted me to start treating all my blades was getting some minor rust pits on a D2 balisong after a longer period of storage.

Just the nature of AUS-8. I occasionally have minor surface rust on my voyager but a paper towel and a bit of silver polish takes care of that. I took my american lawman apart and gave it a hand rubbed satin finish and that helped the steel stay cleaner longer. As for the "losing material and strength" if you're using a buffing compound or metal polish it's such a microscopically fine mixture you're not losing any materal at all.

Strange. I just left my AUS8 voyager in the rain for three days specifically to see what would happen, and there isnt a single spot on it.

Perhaps you could get the blade coated. Or maybe acid wash, tho im not sure if that helps with corrosion.

I've done acid stonewashes on AUS-8 five or six times, and it can still allow rust if you don't oil it.

I don't know if I can force a patina on AUS8A like I did with my Becker knives, so that's iffy at best.

I ended up polishing it very carefully with lots of Barkeeper's Friend, rinsed it off with water, then gave it a mineral oil treatment and let it sit for a day. Seems a bit better now.

Was going to suggest Barkeeper's Friend, and I happen to also use mineral oil so... thumbs up!

There is one product I use for all of my damascus and uncoated carbon steel knives, it's called Renaissance wax. It applies a bit of a water barrier, and also keeps fingerprints from penetrating the surface of the steel so they just don't rust. You can wear it off with repeated use, but if you re-apply it every once in a while, you shouldn't have any issue at all with surface rust.

Can anyone explain how coated 8 can rust when my deliberate attempt didn't even leave a spot?

Not being a smartass.

Seriously, how is this possible? Salt in the moisture maybe?

Thx

It's stanless which means it will stain less. That said, rust on a stainless steel blade is a sign on neglect. Clean your blade more often.

My brother had spotting on his spartan after one day in his pocket. Didn't cut anything but cardboard all day. Some people just have sweat that promotes rust. Beadblast finishes sure don't help either.

I think that much of this rust issue has to do with the particular micro environment the knife is in. I have two dozen CS knives and have never seen one spot of rust. I carry and use them, and never maintain them in any way. But if I gave you one of my knives, it might rust in one day.
