You gents gave me lots of great advice and comments (along with some very motivating pics!) regarding the GEC #48 Slim Trapper here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/907244-Opinions-re-GEC-48-Slim-1-Blade-Trapper I was after a single-blade version and managed to snag one in antique walnut jigged bone. The little darlin' arrived yesterday, and all initial impressions are very good.

It came dull but I wasted no time putting an edge on it with my WorkSharp (mini-belt sander). Next were the sharp corners on the tang---I don't like 'em, so I rounded them off pronto.

I'm still uncertain about the GEC numbering system. This one is etched "1 of 25" on the blade, and has "02" engraved on the bolster. So does that mean this was the second knife made of a run of 25 in antique walnut jigged bone, or....?

I've hardly used it yet, but so far it looks like it will be a great slicer. GEC seems to have hit the sweet spot---a thin agile blade that is still stout enough to have no flex. If feels great in my medium sized hands, with a comfortable full 4-finger grip.

So, thanks, guys---you surely steered me right on this one.

Might as well go ahead and get that patina started!

Great pics Andrew!! I'm sure it'll become a favorite.

As for numbering, you're basically right. It is the 2nd serialized one to come off the line. I believe GEC keeps the ones numbered 01. They also sometimes make "prototypes" which are really the first ones but lets not get into that here. Looking at GEC's 2010 totals, they made 25 serialized ones and 27 unserialized ones.

Thanks, guys. And thanks, Trand, for your help on the GEC numbering.

That is one fine, fine looking knife, Andrew.

The blade really intrigues me ..... "A thin agile blade that is still stout enough to have no flex". On this pattern I think I like the Northfield without a long pull. It looks like the nail nick is placed far enough out on the blade to give good leverage for opening.

Anyway, yet another knife on my radar screen that I really hadn't paid much attention to before. Thanks for the pics and your comments!

Thats a beauty.
Time will handle up on the etches for you and I'm sure the pockets can handle the engraved #.
Keep us posted on how you like it.

Thanks, gentlemen. Keith, the nail nick is indeed well placed and opening the knife is no problem. Once open, the spring is still plenty stiff enough to give good resistance.

Nice choice. I've got one of those myself in the same handle and have been nothing but happy with it.
