I saw a couple of knives on BladeGallery.com earlier in the year by this unknown (to me) maker from Jefferson, Georgia. By the time Blade came around John had earned his JS stamp.

They were of sufficient quality and style that I called and talked to him on the phone. We enjoyed a nice conversation and he offered to build me a knife in a style I was interested in : A Mediterranean dirk or Bowie.

John's work included integral forging, and the two aspects: this style of knife along with an integral guardless construction, were VERY appealing to me. (As most of you guys will know... ;))

John sent me some initial drawings by .JPG and with the wonders of Photoshop I 'tweeked' them a tad to show my very favorite style. I don't think John would want to do this on every knife he builds, but he was very accomodating, and you can see for yourself that he was spot-on in his matching to the drawings. THAT was incredible to me. (see before and after here).

Let's look:

To say I am pleased is an understatement. Here are the specs as John sent:

Spec's on the knife... Steel is 5160, blade is edge hardened & tempered 3X. The spine is tempered to a blue color with a torch. Blade was tempered in an oven twice. Finish is 600 grit. Spacers behind the bolster are nickel silver & black fiber. Wood is figured walnut ( oil finished). Buttcap is 1018 steel.
I didn't spend more time trying to display his temper line, as that is another style of image, but there is a distinct one there.

I mentioned this in another thread, that there is an increased interest and skill level in doing integral-forged knives. John's work is NOW going to be pretty well known, and I am pleased to have worked with him on this.

Looks like Monday is integral day. :) I remember those smaller Parks knives on BG - I sure liked the look of them, but this one really knocks my socks off. I just love what he did with the shaping pf the integral bolster. Great stuff.

PS - Did John do the sheath as well?

Another great one... he really nailed it! Congrats, Coop, and thanks for sharing your wonderful images of this fine piece.

very nice piece coop. i'd been seriously considering picking up one of the blade gallery pieces, but considered it too long and it was gone. great knife!

I remember seeing John's small integrals at blade 2004, and wanting to buy one but they had already all been spoken for. Same thing happened at last Blade. I normally prefer to buy off the table since I get more instant gratification, but I should have really placed an order with him back then.

That's a beautiful piece there.

I am the guy who bought one of John's knives from BladeGallery and about two week later bought another one and then e-mailed him to make one for me :) After seeing this one that Coop got, I am very glad I did. I would take a picture of the ones I bought but there is no way I would want my feeble attempts at photograpy to be in the same thread as Coop's.

I posted this over in the knifemakers forum. I did not get a response so another thanks to Coop for a contact e-mail.
