Last month I snagged the AK here with the expectation of rehandling it and documenting the process. In accordance with my usual luck the handle was actually very nice and didn't need replacing, but I'd already made up my mind and did it anyway.

Since the result turned out a bit larger than I'd expected I decided to present it as a web page rather than a thread here. A word of warning: there are a lot of pics. Users on dialup have been warned.

I'm unable to remember the thread or the poster who first got me interested in leather handles for khukuries here, and after a bit of futile struggling with the search engine, I've given up on finding it. I'd still like to thank that poster for mentioning it though, as this has become my favorite handle material for serious users since then.

Much better tutorial than the one I did Dave, I've leather handles on two of mine now the first was a Bilton and the second was a 12" Pen Knife.

Very good stuff. Thank you for the link. I saved it for when I feel ambitious.:)

Wow Dave thats a great website. When I had a leather handled knife that needed a rebuild, bad Ebay mistake, I had to send it to the Knife Doctor in the US.

Damned nice work Dave and I didn't see any mishaps, but then I wasn't looking for any either. It's been my experience that I know what and where any mistakes are in something I did but unless I just plain point them out to anyone else they will seldom if ever see them. I've tried a couple of leather handles when I was a whole lot younger but since I could never make them look as good as the production made leather handles I gave up on them, do have to say they were very comfortable in the hand in spite of that though, just messy and nasty feeling when they got wet. :barf:
Maybe if there had been epoxy back in that day and age I would'a had better luck.;) :D

Dave,
Great mod. Getting to read this is like getting a new issue of Blade. Fun. Thanks for sharing.

VERY nice work.

Great explanation and illustrations.

You're not just a pretty face, after all.

Does anybody have any thoughts on what the shoulders could be for? They seem like something deliberately done.
