what is the friction cutting speed (minimal) for cutting 304 stainless? brass? i'm thinking of putting a friction cutting blade on my bandsaw, but i don't want to change anything. it runs at 2,600 fpm. i'd like to cut out bolster/guard material without having to buy another bandsaw. does friction cutting make a squealing noise?

44,
I have the luxury of a VERY nice friction saw at my full time job. It's a monster! The blade travels at about 4500 feet per minute. It has special large rollers on very heavy duty guides. I have never seen a blade made for friction sawing. We use cheap fine tooth blades on it and they last a long time. The teeth are pretty much gone at first contact!
YES, it makes a squeel! It's more of a high pitched ROAR!! When I use the saw, I wear ear plugs, safty glasses, face mask, welders hat, sleeves and gloves! It sends tiny molten metal particles everywhere. It will cut through 1/2" 303 or 304 like butter. The best thing about the saw is that it cuts Talonite like butter also! It takes longer to put on all the safety equipment than it does to cut out a knife blank!
I have friction cut Titanium on my wood bandsaw but never tried blade steel.

44,
I just posted a long winded response to your topic and it disapeared

!!!
The short version.......
The friction saw at my full time job runs at around 4500 feet per minute! I have never seen a blade for friction sawing. We use cheap fine tooth blades and cut all kinds of S.S. on it and it lasts a long time. The teeth are gone in a matter of seconds anyway!
What I like about it is that it cuts Talonite like butter!
I'm not sure if 2600 is fast enough to generate the friction needed. At the speed the saw I use runs, it will cut 1/2" 304 like butter.
It makes lots of noise and wear plenty of eye protection. I wear safety glasses, facemask, welders hat, sleeves, gloves and apron. Lots of tiny molten metal particles fly all over the place!

neil, the post is there, thanks. how much would a small 115v friction cutting bandsaw cost? i really can't fit to many more bandsaws in the shop though.

like neil, i have cut ti on my wood cutting bandsaw, but never knife steel, but stan fujisaka does it regularly on his. i have a metal cutting bandsaw, and the ti wastes the blades, thats why i use the wood one.

Magnum,
I don't know who makes a small friction saw! I could be wrong but now that almost every successful sheetmetal fabrication company has lazor cutting ability, I think Friction sawing could become a thing of the past. The machine at my company is more than 25 years old. I only cut tool steel on it once in a while. It will set Titanium on fire almost instantly! Not just the chips, the material you are cutting! As Tom mentioned, friction sawing Ti. on a slower wood bandsaw is the way to go.

on second thought i'm gonna skip the whole friction cutting thing, to much of a fire hazard. i think i go with the 36ton Piranha ironworker, already have one of them!

i don't have a use for ti, yet. maybe i'll get into friction cutting when i start making folders.
