Friction fire on the back porch

Decided to go out side and practice my handdrill friction fire. The white string on the spindle in the first pic was put there to stop it from splitting from multiple uses.

I can get a coal in about 30 seconds, and fire most of the time within a minute after that.

Enjoy the pics. Some are out of order, dunno how that happened.

right on! nicely done. I have yet to get fire by friction here on the Wet Coast.

Thanks! The thumb loops used really make a difference, you should try using them. In this pic, I used a soft shoelace, just cause when Im doing it 5 or 6 times, a piece of paracord can become uncomfortable.

I was expecting you to be some wizened old leathery looking guy!

That's quite a skill! Excellent!!!

Great job and way to go. My wife wishes I would practice on the porch too.
I tell her it to dang cold for that lol.

After I dropped a coal on the carpet she was not to happy with that lol.
I was using just my leather coal catcher.

I still use my leather coal catcher but put it on card board:D

Bryan, you're a man after my own heart. I use aluminum foil as a fire pan, though.

Great work! If I ever bring myself to try the hand drill again I am using those thumb loops!

They really help, cause its like a bearing block, and you can just focus on timing the spindle. Hands never move up or down. I just took the saw on my SAK and cut a notch on the top of the spindle, for the cord to sit in.

Hi all,

Doc, I never thought about ;using tin foil that is a good idea though.

Friday night afternoon I was using horseweed on a cottonwood
hearth board and ended up getting a coal in the notch and then
one end my spindle in the pith:thumbup: and as I was taking it
out of the hearth it fell out and not on the leather coal catcher ,
but thankfully it landed on the card board lol.

Scott Free, the reason I am still alive. Like a said I am better
fist fighter than the she is. My fat lower lip still hurts, but her
2 black eyes and a cracked rib from when I kicked her when she
was down :D makes me feel better. I tell ya that skinny bitch
is tough and hits hard, but not hard enough lol.

Ok that really did not happen, but Kathy was not happy, heck
I was not happy either carpet cost a bunch of money lol. Well
I learned to not just rely on my leather coal catcher.

As to here being a Angle at times she sure is;).
