If you have something like a Trailhawk and you wanted to be able to use it for self-defense do you think leaving the screw-in is a good idea? Could the friction fit head become loose during a fight? I understand some heads are more snug than others

Dont think a hatchet is a good idea for self defense,if you had to use it how would you explain it to the judge.

That if you had to use it, it was between you living and you dying. At least make sure you're able to make it to the court room for that question to be asked.

OP, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're uncomfortable with it, it's probably not a tool you should rely on but I don't think they're known for spontaneously falling apart and they are use a lot on wood which is a hard target than a person. If removing the screw you would likely need to clean up the head and handle a bit as the press-on deal they have from the factory is a way to make it easier to manufacture with less consistency. I think most people take a file to them from the start because they're cheap enough that 30 min of work is worth the low cost.

I'm not sure a hawk is a good multi-person weapon as the heads are known for getting stuck into the target. I think the spike hawk may be better in that regard. Myself, I prefer a bludgeon of some kind as they're more foolproof in the heat of the moment and the force of impact has good stopping power. Probably not the best for quick, repeat strikes like something more balance like a knife but that's okay too. In all honesty, everything is a weapon when it comes to a fight and most of those can be used as a bludgeon.

P.S. this probably belongs in practical tactical but the answer that usually comes out every time, is that you should use a gun instead. Saved you 5 pages of why a gun is the best option according to most of these types of threads on this forum.

dont think a gun with a punisher skull or a 12 inch bowie is a good idea either, they can say your looking for trouble.

They can but that's something they can always say, even if you beat the hell out of someone with your fists.

Being that the OP is considering a hawk for SD I am making an assumption that he's protecting his home or land as walking around with a hawk is a bad idea unless you use it as part of your daily job, IMO. I think the "looking for trouble" is far easier to defend against based on that assumption but as that wasn't specified originally I could be wrong there. My comments about a bludgeon are also applied to that assumption as the quarters are a lot tighter to where the item can be used to surprise an attacker. My SD plan is based around avoiding hallways for any type of melee fighting and protecting the doorway to where I'm hiding out.

Not being detrimental to hawks if that’s what your thinking.Have been arrested in la,ms,tx,Wisconsin and mn for as you said beating the hell out of someone with your fists and the worst I have got is probation and that was in mn,a friend of mine did a little over four years here for hitting somebody with a beer mug when a couple of fellas were beating on him.I would try and avoid hitting anyone with an axe.

If the fit is good there's very little risk of the head loosening. That being said, employing the set screw for such scenarios is probably a good idea just to be 110% certain.

Thanks for the replies glad it did not get too sidetracked about legalities definitely not the point of my question it's purely theoretical it could be a bear attack for all I care about
