Friction folder karambit design

Just had a thought pop into my head and thought I'd sketch it out in paint to see if it's a stupid idea or has some merit.
Karambit folders are scary because they may fold on you

This is a folder that can't. It's sort of a karambit with built in sheath.

Totally stupid idea?

Not a blade smith, so I don't know if my opinions is "more experienced" but here we go.

I don't know if this design would be all that functional. A Karambit as a self defence tool needs to be quick on the draw and easily concealed. I think with this design, it would only be a two-handed opener. Also, with the design the way it is, the sheath/handle piece takes up more space than just using a regular fixed blade with a sheath. Lastly, and I think others may agree, a single edged locking Karambit has very little chance of closing on you when used properly.

I'm not sure what my experience is worth, but as a full time soldier with a bit of training in this area i would agree 100% with oXobsidian on this one... Id say it's kind of defeating the purpose of a quick access self defense tool that isn't quick to access. When comparing it to a fixed blade Karambit, it's slower to employ, larger and harder to conceal, weaker structurally and it only as rigid as the person's grip holding it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input!

You guys are totally right about the quick deploy aspect. I wasn't thinking about that at all. I think I was focused in on the legal aspects of having it be a folder but function as a fixed blade.

Hey man... it's the outside the box thinking like that which keeps the knives and tools moving forward. Keep the ideas rolling.

i like it, you wouldn't need a sheath on your belt. It is a fixed blade - the "sheath" is the only moving part, right? Could you open this one handed, if you put a tab on the butt end of the sheath to grasp to flip the knife open/closed? Might be dangerous.

I guess I must be missing something? Why would there not be a built in lock as with a liner lock and of course a thumb stud for fast opening?
Frank.

The idea was a folding fixed blade...more or less a self sheathing blade. It can't fold or fail at the pivot in use, because the actual knife is a regular karambit.

What is really funny is no one has seen the elephant in the room - the sheath part won't rotate to open position because the tang would strike the spacers/spine of the sheath.

I'm glad to give my opinion on new designs when asked for. I am confused as to how you know what my experience level is with blade design or the functional applications therein.

I think he was going on your new status here, your profile, as well as your comments that you were a new maker looking to learn.

Looks interesting, maybe ... creative solution ... not so much, as it won't work.
