I want to try building a friction folder. Does anyone have any simple plans or a video they would be willing to share with me so I know what materials I need to order and how to proceed?

Thanks

Todd

Wow....... Stacy I'm not sure that response was necessary . You are undoubtedly a master knife maker. I have read and bookmarked many of your post.

I think that some forget that our true legacy as knife makers are not the knives we make but the knowledge we pass down to the next generation of makers.

While there is all the information you need on the net sometimes it nice to talk to a person that can expand on the original question.

This forum has a reputation for flaming beginners. It was recently brought up on bushcraft USA.

You could have simply ignored the question . this person may never ask another question here and that would be a shame .

If you choose to ban me from this site so be it. But I think you need to remember why most people come here and that is to learn from the best in the art.

Sorry if anyone took it as an attack. I regularly ask the members here to be as kind as possible to beginners. As far as flaming beginners/new members, I don't think that is the norm. In my many posts, I have rarely blasted a beginner unless there is a major problem or reason.
Many new guys have taken umbrage when more experienced folks critiqued their designs or knives. The perception of being flamed may come from when new members ask for critique, but really don't want it.

However, the OP is not a new member.
My point was that knifelobbyist has been around here two years, and it took him longer to type his post than a simple Google search would have taken. We are all glad to help folks out, but they should at least try to look for the answer first.

Here's how I like to start one from scratch...

1. make 3 rectangles... 2 for the handle and one for the blade. They can be close to the same size, just leave the blade a bit longer so you can have a tang. Sand them flat and parallel...

2. Drill and ream pivot hole about 40% up from the handle bottom

3. locate stop pin, drill and ream through frames and blade stock with the knife open

4. close the knife and drill a choil/bottom of blade stop location through the stop pin hole

5. Grind to look like a knife

This needs to be worked out on a template first! Make a plastic or wooden one.

Here's a diagram to explain the steps, I hope this helps someone out!

Maybe I should have prefaced my post with the statement that I have "googled" it extensively and was only able to come up with what I consider to be more advanced tutorials for people who have built knives already. BUT I may not have "googled" the right phrase. I have never built a knife (I don't even know if Ive ever sharpened a stick haha) so I need BASIC instruction. Also, I could find no "plans" by googling...what I wanted is very similar to what Daniel Fairly Knives posted above. So yes I "googled" it...but honestly some experienced folks chiming in would be more educational for me.

Also, I could use a materials list if anyone has one to share. What steel, handle material, pins, screws do you recommend?? I'm looking for simple to start with. I don't even know what to look for on the knife making supply sites I have been perusing. I THINK I know...but thats different from someone who does know advising me.

If you have never made a knife, then you need to start from the top. Go to the stickies. Make a few small fixed blade knives, and then at some point in the future make a friction folder. A friction folder is a somewhat advanced project, so its unreasonable to think that someone would make a tutorial specifically written for someone who has never made a knife. You need to build your own knowledge and skills until you get to the point where you understand basic materials and processes to make this decision on your own. Then the many friction folder tutorials will start to make sense.

Sure people have been asked to use the search function just as people have been asked to stop being rude in their posts.

Lets work on both of those things
