I have been a member for some time but, this is my first post! So Hello to evryone!!!!
I am interested in 1800's period knifes. As of present I don't have my forge up and running. I am working on stock reduction knife. As of late I have been playing around with remaking old butcher knifes. I know a lot of you are going to say that's not knife making but it allows me to work with the steel and making of handles at a very cheap starting point. I figure it's cheaper to make my mistakes here than on a total custom piece!
Most 1800's style knifes were just that, "Ole butcherknives ", that somemone made a sheath for and started carring on their sides!
I am interested in the Friction folders of that period, and have come up with a few of my own designs. However I do not like a knife that has no lock on the blade and I am trying to come up with something that would be correct for that period in time. I realize this would not be a true friction folder but I still like the idea of a locking blade. Anyone got any ideas along these lines? I want something that that is fairly obscure if possible. I have done several Google searches with little success. I would even consider something that might not be period correct if it is obscure, so as not to take away from the knife!!!!!!!

Just my thought but the extended tang against the handle should be enough (keep in mind I am a slipjoint person and locks are not that important to me) , but if you really want to lock it, my first thought was some type of rotating collar (a la Openiel) would still enable you to come up with a design that would fit the period.
