Hi,

I was looking up friction folders on this site when I came upon this old thread:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=589952

In it, some posters talk about knives that function like friction folders but that have a mechanism on the top that mechanically holds the tang in place so that one doesn't have to worry about the knife shutting if one loses their grip. Gerber and Dennis Booker are mentioned but I haven't been able to find any Gerber knives that fit that type or find a site for Dennis Booker.

Does anyone know of any knives like these? They sound kind of like a mix of an opinel and a friction folder to me.

D---That sounds interesting.
I have a Curly FF by Filip De Leeuw and it works just fine; I would not want a lock on a Frickie. If the Tang is long enough to hold with a thumb or finger, you're good to go.

Technically speaking, Opinels are friction folders, but the ones after No.6 have a locking ring on top of that. I guess one could argue that if you were to make a knife similar to a Svord, and to attach a bail that could rest over the extending notch, that would work to lock it in place.

Consider the image below. If that were a bar or a bail, it could thusly slip over the bump on the tang and essentially lock open.

Edit: Yes yes, I know that the bail or bar can't be put in that exact spot, as it'd keep the knife from folding completely into the handle. It's simply an example. I can see it working somewhat better with a russlock design.

Pie---Thanks for the post and the pic.
Interesting idea.
BTW, Esav pointed out that Ragweed Forge have some nice Frickies.

Where did you purchase the Curly, Lycosa? From a site or directly through a maker? I'm thinking of getting the Svord Peasant folder sold on ragweed.

Yayilikepie, that is an interesting design idea. Maybe I'll try modding my svord once I get it.

Does anyone know what was meant in the post I linked to where a member said that Gerber held a patent for such a design?

William Henry produced a model in two sizes that had a relatively short-tanged friction folder set-up. If I remember correctly, there was a ball detent somewhere in the mix. I handled one once, but didn't feel it had enough of a tang to hold onto when using. If someone came up with a stronger ball detent, I could see a friction folder style working for me. Something about as strong as the ball retention used in most socket sets.

just throwing out some thoughts,
Daniel

That William Henry design sounds interesting. Do you have any links to it? Is this it: http://www.williamhenryknives.com/product/pocket/legacy/index.html?

Having a smaller tang like that is nice in that it would make the blade easier to carry. But I feel like the Svord looks to offer a more secure grip. I was wondering if anyone tried incorporating a mechanism in the handle you could slide over the tang to keep it in place. Since the mechanism only moves horizontally the up and down pressure of the blade wouldn't affect it as much....

....The five years since I took AP Physics in high school have not served me well

Dennis Booker is shown in the engraving book. His method was a ring lock in the pivot area. You had a friction folder then screwed the pivot down tight to hold it in the open position so it wouldn't close.

Thanks for the clarification argel55. Do you know where one can order/view the 'engraving book?' Have you ever handled one? From what you are saying it sounds like it'd take two hands to activate and deactivate the lock.
