This is the first friction folder I've made so far so be nice ;). It has a blade from Garry Kelley (Reproduction Blades), it is cast D2 and absolutely razorsharp. To make the handle I used a Zebu horn tip. It took me a while to figure out how to carve the horn so the blade fits OK but finnaly it worked. I used a hacksaw, two flat files (a small one and a medium one), 180 and 360 sandpaper. Zebu horn is cool, but smells like s#*t when you work it.
Now I have to figure out how to make the horn shiny! I's smooth, free of scratches but doesn't shine. Do you thing buffing it with the Dremel using the same compound as for metal and plastics will work? If not, how do you give a cool finish to horn?

Hey neat! Looks like a fun little toy. Try the dremel stuff on a scrap piece if you have it. It will probably work but even better would be to get a small hardsewn buffing wheel that will mount in an electric drill. They must have them in France although some friends of mine who worked in France a couple of years ago said that the hardware stores were really weird....

Hi Flavius!

How to polishing depends on how much money you are gonna spend and if it has to be done by machine or arm grease. As the horn is a pretty soft material i would go for arm greas, at least for the first time. Get yourself a set of Micromesh abrasives (from 1500 to 12000 grit!) and go ahead! Send me a line so i can tell you where to get it over here in Europe!
