What is a friction folder, who makes some and where can I go on the web to see some photos of one

Thanks

a friction folder is a folding knife with no backspring, no locking mechanism and where friction between the liners and the blade provide resistance when the knife if close and when it is open.

There are some cool friction folders coming from Oupa and e3ck. You can look for their names in posts and then open their profile and look at their created threads. This should give you some cool pics to drool over.

Here is Oupa's website:

enjoy!

Gedraitis Knives is making me one. Chuck Gedraitis. Try Gene Ingram, also.

I don't get it. Is there some advantage to this seemingly primitive design or is the appeal mostly traditional/historical?

For the cutting I do, I don't need a lock. I wanted the most simple folder made. A handle, blade, and pocket clip. That's my story.

Well, for one it's legal anywhere you go, provided the blade length is legal. It's also a very simple folder to operate, clean and maintain. Minimal moving parts and as useful as any slipjoint.

If you do a lot of stabbing, poking or prying, it's not for you. Otherwise, they're great knives!

No more legal than a slipjoint, but I see the simplicity angle. Reminds me of a folding straight razor. I'd be a little worried about opening in the pocket.

Here's a few that I made. I have been making these for years, lot of fun.Dave:)

Am I sensing an increased interest in friction folders?!

I would think so. For years you could only sell them to re-enactors,but things have definately changed. Updating with new and exotic materials have helped quite a bit.I know my sales on this type have been very good.I hope the interest keeps going up and other makers start making a few as they are quite fun. Dave:)

Thanks, Dave! Chuck G. is making me one with Red Micarta and A-2. I did not know about you then. To me, these FF make complete sense. Thanks!
