I don't think I've ever seen one except in pictures, and those are always open... when the folder is closed isn't there a lever sticking out that's part of the blade tang? I don't think I'd like that too much if that's the case.

I've seen them like that too Ryan, and I've always wondered what its purpose was. I make them like a regular pocket knife.
Maybe someone knows why that little thingy is there.

I can see two possible reasons to have that extended tang that you see so often on a friction folder. The first is that it may serve as a one-hand opening device. MOre likely is that it increases the surface area of the tang, thus increasing the friction, and thus adding to the stability of the knife. Sean Perkins is making a wonderful line of friction folders that are AWESOME!

Thanks, Chiro! The reason for the thingy (I call it the horn, and I hate it, too) is to contact the stop pin and/or the spine area of the handle material or the spacer, whichever the case. Mine are "modern friction folders," made in the open-spine style without the thingy. They all have extended tangs (but not tang extenstions, if that makes any sense) with choils, so the question of lock doesn't really enter into the equation, so long as you keep your index finger in contact with the tang. The pivot pins are adjustable, too, so they're pocket carryable with the right pin adjustment (there's a note about this on the site).

Opinels are friction folders with a lock. I had a Case one hander that was a friction folder as well but with a liner lock but not the Walker type.
