does anyone have a diagram or drawing of a friction folder blade. Goddard had one in his book but my copy grew leggs and walked away. I want to make sure I get the hole in the right place. thanks, JIM

Gene Chapman makes alot of mountain man style friction folders, he has some books out about it and other stuff on his site... http://www.oakandiron.com/
I ordered some but that was just the other day and they haven't arrived yet, so I can't comment on how good they are.

Jim, I love to make them and do very often.Genes books are well worth the money for anybody interested in these as well as " the Wonder of Knifemaking" by Wayne Goddard.I make several types but being a stock removal maker I had to try some different styles. One is a clasp style with a solid antler, and a slab style with a backspacer, like Wayne makes.
I usually find the antler I want to use before designing the blade, and as for the pivot hole it depends on design of the blade and antler.Generally in the center of the antler about 3/8" - 1/2" back.If you use a stop pin, it goes as far back as you make the tail and down enough to keep the blade flat.I hope this helps a little.and I will put up two of my recent ones to show you how I do it.Dave :)

Funny you should mention this as I've been thinking about it a lot lately too. And Dave since I'm a stock removal maker your pics are timely! Thanks, those are beautiful knives.

Like Ray, I usually make a pattern too before I start. On a folder I'd sure as hell do that! Nothing would be worse than to put the thing together and have it look stupid cause the hole was misplaced.

Be sure to let us see what you come up with,

Jim, You should be able to make a cardboard pattern and figure out where to put the hole.
