hey guys i'm looking for some tutorials on friction folders, pics to study and some good basic tips ya know? the do's and dont's of making friction folders, what tools to use etc. thanks ahead of time for the help
hey Dan maybe this is a topic you can add to your "how to" page when we get some tutorials

For the most part, a friction folder is just a liner lock without the lock. There are some good tutorials on linerlocks floating around that you can use to figure out the placement of your pivot, stop pin etc.

Gene Chapman from Bremerton WA had several publications through I believe the Pinch Penny Press. He had one on friction folders and one on saddleback folders...Ed

Michael, I make alot of these, although I tend to dress them up a tad versus the mountain man style.Ed is right, Gene makes a good book on it and you can find some info in Wayne Goddards book"The Wonder of Knifemaking". One tip is if you use an antler tip, pic it first then design the blade to fit it.Its hell having a blade already profiled only to have to hunt for a decent handle. The diameter and curvature if the tip all come into play.I use a Dremel with doubled up abrasive wheels( the fiberglass reinforced ones) to cut the slot.I also use a bronze bushing on my pivot pin. I also do stock removal so I use a second pin for the stop. This method was one descibed by Goddard.I have also split the antler and put in a backspacer to catch the tail and do without the stop pin. They are fun to make, and I am happy to say good sellers.Hope this helps.Dave
Here's a couple of mine.

Hey Mike, you getting the "primitive " bug with all that black powder smoke? Hope you get some good info, and dont mind sharing! I'd like to try making one of these, it would look good in a possibles bag. P.S. I got the pattern for you to make your own bag up.

man these things seemed simple... i think i'm thining too much :foot:
man i looked through the wonder of knife making and in antler and iron 2 and i'm just getting confused. seems when i try to draw a blade that looks good i make a template and pivot it, and it always end up too big for the handle material. where am i going wrong here? the first two i messed with in the shop fit nicely into the stag, now i go and plan em out and read up on it and i'm screwing things up. any help would be much appreciated. man i need some sleep  thanks guys
