Hi there ~ I just took delivery of an Opinel 8 Slim in Bubinga... It's a beautiful knife, but it's got a couple of issues. The back 1/2" of the blade is totally unsharpened, which is fine. The bigger one is in the locking ring. I noticed it had quite a bit of up/down play when locking it closed. I grabbed the locking collar, pulled up with very little pressure and it popped right off. I snapped it back on but comparing it to the Opinel in my desk drawer, it seems the pivot pin is overly peened and pretty flat on both sides. Does anyone have any idea on the diameter of the pin on a No8 Slim? I'm not so much concerned about it coming unlocked/open as I am about physically losing the ring.

Eyeballing it, I'm thinking 3mm? It should be a really easy fix, I just want to get the right size rod the first try

Use common nails. Maybe a finish nail would peen/shape easier. File them to the proper diameter by chucking them in a drill. Make the pins fit the hole in the blade.

Sorry I can't answer your question.

Hey Jim, that does just fine... it's a beautifully elegant hillbilly solution which seems to fit the knife really well :-)

Thanks for the help!

Oh, the humanity! That looks like a really nice example, I like the figuring of the wood, especially down at the bottom ;) I have year old twin dudes, earlier today a had the fat one with me while i was changing from work clothes to shorts - he was eyeing the opinel pretty hard, and I'm thinking he had similar plans for mine

The finish nail seems to have done the trick for now... the lock is a lot more snug and I don't think it'll pop off as readily. I'll try to get my hands on a caliper and get something more permanent in

Until not so long ago there was no lockring when closed, just when open. I never heard of s.o. wounded by a sudden opening of his knife. But if that matters to you (and you're right) you should ask for an exchange.
