Friend giving me his Spyderco Manix 2 Knife Translucent Blue

A friend is only keeping 2-3 knives and that's freeing up the Spyderco he wants to give me when I visit next week. What can I expect from the Manix 2, do you like the knife, and how strong and reliable is the ball bearing lock?

I like it. Decent steel, lightweight, Axis-type lock, cool translucent handle...what's not to like? My only real dislike (I can even abide the wire clip which I usually hate) is that it's just a touch to wide in profile, taking up a little more room in my pocket than necessary.

the wire clip is my main dislike on spyderco folders .. but i have lots of friend that loved it cos its actually very discreet and look nothing like the clip for folding knives.

i have the recently discontinued manix2 with sabre grind which is much heavier compared to the lightweight version but i kinda gotten used to it on me as i have bigger ZTs and DPX gears folders too which i rotate thru.

its designed for lightweight edc carry and for that weight and a decent length, you can handle lots of stuffs. but being light will certainly limits the spectrum of task it can do but i would say it will handle most daily task with ease and the lock is just right too.

Wire clips don't bother me at all. Lightweight edc is right up my alley and I'm only using it to cut things and not twist or chop. If I need a knife for heavier use I always go to the fixed blade and not waste time with a folder.

hehe, then i think you already got your answer there .. the lightweight version was design with its intended purpose and if will suit you well. i would say its strong enough for those task you do and do not foresee any failure of the lock so long you do not abuse it.

personally i do not mind carry a heavier knife and with my preference of G10 scales with normal clip, i went for the heavyweight manix2 instead but the Manix2 XL will be kinda too much for me thou i do carry heavier folders like those from ZTs and DPXs

Well, this is in the case of an EDC. OP hasn't said what the knife's intended purpose would be, however I don't mind it at all. I actually have a strict policy on the jeans I buy, they must have large pockets. Maybe its just the jeans I buy.

Aside from that, I love the Manix 2. I own the XL version of the knife, and I plan to swap the S30V blade out for an S90V, so I can keep the beautiful G10 Scale handles. This knife is everything I'd ask for in a folder.
The ballbearing lock is very strong, and will withstand threw countless overstrikes and spine whacks, as proven on YouTube. Anything that will get threw this lock, and you'd be past the point of needing a fixed blade for the tasks your putting this thing threw.
Flat grind is more preference, I still prefer it over anything else for a folder.
The blade shape (Large Leaf) made me want the knife even more when deciding on my first Spydie.
The Finger choil and all the jimping makes for a better grip and more control over the whole knife.

If you're looking for a brother for that knife, I highly recommend a Spyderco Military, or/and if u can get your hands on one a Paramilitary 2.
The Military is everything the Manix 2 isn't, and if you prefer a smaller blade and don't mind waiting for one to pop up a Paramilitary 2 will fit your needs.
I personally like the PM2 cause of the compression lock, and the smaller blade. I don't find myself needing 2 large blades too often. I do like the thickness of the Military tho.

Arghhhh, the decisions! I still have no clue what I'm getting next!
