Today I heard the most outragous thing, my friend told me that he saw someone start a fire with Fritos brand corn chips....the sounds strangly obsurd, I dont now have any fritos but I was hoping some of you might know what I'm talking about.

If you have any fritos lying around please try to light one on fire and tell me what happens.....maybe I should beat the sense into my jerk-off friend :jerkit:

Fritos won't lite from a spark, but the oil they are cooked in will burn for quite a while, not ideal, but in the right situation they can help.

Regardless, I wouldn't bother to keep any in my BOB, except as a midnight snack.

Yes, they will burn, as will potato chips cooked in oil. About 10 yeans ago, while serving on an emergency response team through my local Sheriff's Dept., I got to attend an arson investigation class, the instructor told us that it's very common for some arsonist to use a cigarette in a bag of chips to start fires to look like an accident.

I've heard that Coffee Mate is highly flammable as well. Don't want to hijack the thread tho' :D

LMFAO :D boy does this thread stir up some memories. I remember when I was in Boy Scouts one of my friends cooked his food with some Fritos. He put some in a used up sterno can.

Yup, it's just corn. Doritos work too.
google "corn burners". The makers can't keep up with the demand.

Practically anything that is fried in oil will burn. Good reason to carry some fried junk food in your vehicle for emergencies. Eat & Heat! :D

Wolf you're wrong it isn't "just corn". It is the oil along with the corn, potato, whatever. Some "chips" are as much as 30% oil and burn like little torches. I think SoCA was the hub of potato chip arson fires.

TLC as a career firefighter I've attended the same classes over the years. It is amazing what can be done with common household chemicals, eh? Time delay mixtures were the most fun for me. And before anyone asks no we won't tell what we saw in those classes.

Not quite.

It's a lightweight powder, though, and if tossed over an open flame it will create a momentary fireball... but so will a lot of substances, as with a grain silo explosion.

I don't know about Fritos, but I recently experimented with Cheetos and Pop-Tarts. Cheetos would work well as emergency fuel pellets; Pop-Tarts' flammability, on the other hand, has been grossly exaggerated by both Dave Barry and the internet.

I wrote a post on my blog, with pictures: http://fearsclave.livejournal.com/414640.html?mode=reply

The biggest problem with Fritos is they taste awful. I guess that would mean they're available when needed.

I don't know if they've changed the formula, but back in the day MRE peanut butter could hold a flame. Just like the freto's, perhaps it's the oil.

I heard on the TV the other day that as a hurricane is approaching Walmart's biggest selling item is beer. After the hurricane passes the biggest seller is Pop Tarts.

I couldn't tell you when the last time I ate a pop Tart was. I don't think I have ever bought any.

That's for sure, I also had to take a HazMat class, now that I know how to read those placards on all those tanker trucks running up and down the highway, I hate driving near them!

There are some truly scary things on our highways and they aren't all from hitch-hiker movies...:D
