My three tine frog spear arrived today. It only weighs 1.1oz/30g. The major bulk is the handle socket, and I may just flatten that to make it more packable. They make five tine spears too, but I wanted the smallest, lightest one I could get. Seems it should be good for fish, frogs and birds too.

I had one before, they are made of pretty crappy steel (easy to sharpen, easy to bend, easy to rust). They work good for frogs, but spearing small fish is more of an art than I can master. The problem is that you have to spear fish against the ground to have the tines stick, this can prove tricky. Good luck.

Yeah, figuring the offset in vision created by the water is a fine art anyway. It struck me as a light-n-cheap addition to my survival gear. I bet they work great on the dumber species of birds. A grouse, Canada goose or a mallard would be pretty tasty in a tight spot.

I still plan on adding one to my kit. Maybe I'll get two so I can play with one of them.

i've had one of these gigs for years... it's harvested a lot of frogs and some crawdads..... :D i love it... great addition to any kit....

Got me a fish spear head and frog gig in my kit. They work great for small game too.

Depends...is rodent considered a white or a dark meat???? I carry some extra large fish hooks in my psk they're more packable in my kit that a frog spear head. they can be lashed singulalry or double up at opposing angles to make a gaf or a spear. Enjoy, let us know how it works out.

I was looking at the spear and I'm thinking about cutting off part of the ferrule, leaving enough to fit on my trekking pole tip.

Maybe some of our bladesmiths could cook something up along the lines of an MSR needle tent stake, with a barb on the end-- an ultralight harpoon. There should be plenty of scrap stainless out there [HINT HINT HINT]. A forked one, kind of shaped like a tuning fork would be good too. If anyone wants to cook one up, I'm all ears. It should be ugly, light weight, and cheap.
