frog stud on sheath?

Just got an 11" ovb fisk and I was wondering how or what the frog stud is used for? is this sheath just designed to hang from a belt?

Usually the knife and sheath go inside the pants and the stud catches on the belt, keeping it from sliding down inside your pants.

Lifetr is right. Also, some sheaths come with a "frog" (a belt loop with a sheath holder) that the sheath slips into and the stud is inserted in a "sllit" allowing it to be carried by the belt loop. Much like the old bayonet frogs.
