Frog?

Okay, silly question to get the day rolling.

What's the little button that I think is called a frog on the side of bowie sheaths for?

Dave

"Frogs" are used on khukuri sheaths, too, and I suspect a variety of others. My understanding it that a frog consists of two loops. One is to loop around your belt, while the other loop is horizontal and it holds the knife sheath. The button on a bowie sheath seems to keep the sheath and frog more secure than sheaths that lack it. I suppose the original purpose behind a frog and sheath combination was to allow quick removal of the knife from the belt, like in social circumstances or something.

Dave,

The "frog", or "belt stud" allows the bowie to be carried in the belt or waistband and prevents the sheathed knife from slipping down/out. It's simple and ingenious because the long bowie doesn't hang and get banged around. It's sits tight and adjusts by sliding back and forth.
