What do people use for retention studs in Bagwell-style sheaths? (Is it correct to call them Bagwell-style? Did he "invent" the frog?)

Thanks in advance for any light shed!

They are made several different ways..I am not sure how the ones Bagwell uses are made though.
They have been made on sheaths since the middle ages, look at the old Bowies and you will see alot of them.

So do you make your own, Bruce? I'm wondering how people attatch them to leather. I used a small drawer knob on a sheath (don't laugh!), which worked ok, but it was a little too big. Since I can't mill or cast one myself, I was wondering if anyone knows of "pre-fab" ones that would work. ???

John,Yes I do make my own. They are not bad to make, the way I make mine is to take a scrap piece of 1/8 inch stock and silver braze it to a piece of 3/16 inch round rod of the same material then I shape the head as I want it then cut the rod off about 3/8 inches long then I drill a 1/16 inch hole in the end and take a scrap piece of .0030 inch Brass and drill a 1/16 inch hole in it and then solder or braze the frog with a ppin in it to the brass,Then I slip it inbetween a second piece of leather and stitch the leather around it to secure it to the sheath. If you want a round tall frog just drill a pin hole in a piece of 1/4 inch round rod then solder the pin in and then chuck it up in your drill press and take different files and cut the rod to the shape you want with the drill press running and then I would attach it to the sheat in the same way.or you could drill and tap the frog then use a small screw with a flat head to secure it.

Thanks for taking the time to explain your process, Bruce! I'm going to have to give it a try. Also, I'll check Sheffield (thanks Sylvester).

If you like the looks of the ones that Sheffield has I wouod just order them as it saves allot of time making them,But then again you don't get that personal touch and design...

Take a look on Bruce's webpage. He shows how to make them for the balls on his guards. I had so much fun turning them on the lathe one day I wound up with about 50 of them. I use them for all sorts of things.:)
