From one Camillus to another (and another)

I usually EDC a Benchmade, Emerson or Zero Tolerance but I do love classic slip joints and SAKs. I always carry a small multi-tool in addition to my EDC knife.

The other day, I was thinking about how most non-knife-nuts wreck their blades: by using them as a screwdriver, using them to pry with, or using them to scrape with. A weak and feeble little light went on in my head...

"Then the Camillus Electrician's Knife (TL-29) should be a God-send to most knife users." There is the friendly-looking spear blade and then a locking screwdriver (nice and long) that is sturdy enough to pry with which has a large scraping edge as well as a wire stripper. The small semi-circular cut in the top of that screwdriver blade is perfect for scraping something with a round profile. To top it off, the knife is made with excellent steel that really holds an edge well.

I decided I was going to begin EDC'ing a Camillus TL-29 and start spreading the word. This went on for about a week while Camillus stayed on my mind. I got out my knife roll of slip joints and fondled my trio of old Camillus #99 scout knives. As I read about the company, I learned that they had produced the 640045R Camper models for Case. Hmmm... that model Case was the first knife I ever purchased back in the mid '70s!

And hey... they made stockmans for Buck, too. The Buck stockman in my roll is really a Camillus!

A few eBay purchases later, I was at the workbench with the 0000 steel wool, Simichrome polish, rags and Rem-Oil, sprucing up a nice pair of Case 640045R Campers and a Camillus large stockman. A nice Camper went in my pocket and the nicer one went in the knife roll. The large stockman is on the dresser so it might easily sneak into the EDC rotation.

I'm still spreading the TL-29 gospel to the non-knife-nuts but I'm usually carrying a different Camillus... one that says "Case".

I love a good TL. Handy suckers. I’ve been carrying it more lately. With tons of EDC dudes carrying separate prybars, you’d figure this Camillus would get a bit of hipster prybar love and enjoy a resurgence.

I love 'em. I have three. The one that's in the nicest shape has such bear traps for back springs in it, I'm barely able to open it. Is there a way to ease up the spring tension without disassembling the knife?

Yes... the TL-29 should, theoretically, be way more popular than it is!

I didn't think people actually used those silly little fashion accessory prybars.

I've got this Klein. Ten bucks at a gun show
I think its a Utica. Weren't TL-29's made by a few companies? Or were they all Camillus's (Camilli?) until they went out of business?

Nah. Using would mar the anodization/titanium/damasteel/diamond encrusted finish. That would be tragic.

Best to stick with using an old $5-10 TL-29 for those purposes.

The only Camillus tl29 I have is this WW2 era USMC stamped one.

Like the venerable Camillus "DEMO" knife, the TL29 was made by several companies, for both the retail market and under government contract for the military, FBI, and CIA, and no doubt other departments.

Utica still makes the Kline and KutMaster knives.
At least Kline and KutMaster were listed on the Utica Cutlery website as their brands the last time I looked, a couple months ago.

UPDATE:
I just went to the Utica Cutlery website.
No traditional knives at all. Just a couple filet knives, a couple fixed blade hunting knives like a caper and "skinner", some modern OHO's and a flipper or two, in addition to flatware sets and a few kitchen and steak knives.

No Kline knives at all.

Very disappointing. :(

Look at Uticausa "dot" com under every day carry in the menu. Not sure if I could post the link, they still have a handful of traditional patterns available.

I bought the Channellock branded Camillus for the minor home electrical repairs kit I set up and haven't used it much, truth be told I'm not sure I wanna wear the etch or cover it with patina if I was to carry it.

The brown handled Camillus #27 ( curious that the other is neither marked TL-29 or a #27 ) I haven't carried in a while but it's a great knife that I'll probably carry here soon.
