Still working on the best gear set up for myself here.

I've gone back to the Buck 110 I got from Dave and ditched everything with a pocket clip on it. Lost a Surefire E2D the otherday rolling out of a Blackhawk and decided to leave the Emerson Benchmade in the ruc after that, don't want to lose anything else.

It's a little hard to get to the 110 with armor on but not too bad. Plus, I have a Randall on the armor if I need a knife while I'm wearing it.

Also, I simply enjoy using the 110. Something a little cultured about the damascus and stag in a place like this.

With all the straps on the gear the pocket clips are just not a good idea, they are catching on stuff all the time and really catch the Blackhawk belts with the way they ride.

I've lost about $200 worth of gear in the last week that way, not risking more. Plus, it's a good reason to use the Buck more:D

Just an observation from my end.

OC...do you use a sheath for your 110 or attach it some other way to your LCE? Or carry it in your pocket?

Got a pic of that 110 Damascus???? :)

I'm wearing it on my pants belt. Sits low enough that the armor doesn't hang on it much, it is a lower than normal factory sheath though. Also, I have it with me that way when I drop my gear. Very little room on my armor for much else and the Randall, Gerber multi-tool, and Benchmade belt cutter is there if I need a knife.

No pics with me. However, Dave may still have some of it and I'm sure he'll be along before long;)

I have found pocket clips to be unreliable as well. (Even in my wimpy civilian life style.)

(edits mine) Gee, sounds like you've got a really boring life there, pal. :D ;) Maybe you oughta join some forums, get out more, go on some hikes . . .

Okay, kidding aside, I switched back to a 110 from a pocket clip/tactical as well. You switched for the same reasons I did. I loved the idea of a pocket clip, but it was always catching on something. After leaving a BAD scratch on our car, tying down last years' Christmas tree - that was the last straw, it had to go. I love the mechanics of them (pocket clip tacticals, that is), but from a practical standpoint, a knife with a pocket clip just isn't what I need.

Even after carrying one for three years, in all that time, when I reached for my knife, I instinctively would reach behind myself first, reaching for that old 110 in the sheath . . . old habits are hard to break.

It'll be interesting to hear what others say about switching back, too.

thx - cpr

I never used a knife with a pocket clip, just could'nt stand the way it felt in my hand while using it. I do enjoy the 110 sheath it positions the knife out of my pocket. DM

pocket clip..
well i tryed one on a 442...
i liked it as i could clip to my shirt pocket or jacket pocket.
- pants pockets ...
experances with buckels and keys damageing paint and jest putting holes in the inside of the pocket put me back on a sheath for carry...
for edc the woven sheaths with velcro closure worked best

This thread has caused me to re-examine some scratches on my mini-van. Sure enough, the scratches are the same height as a pocket clip. I didn't stop there however. In the house, mysterious gouges to doors and frames also happen to be the same level as a pocket clip. :grumpy:

Well, I have learned my lesson. Pocket clip knives are now 'safe queen' knives. My doors will thank me.

Pocket clips are hard on seat covers, too. However, I do like a pocket clip on a knife that I can carry in the ruler pocket of my bib overalls, which I wear when doing yard and "dirty" work. Hard to beat a 110 in a leather sheath 99% of the time.

It's not an issue for me here. However, at home I would often catch the clip on my steering wheel getting out of the car. Both my truck and the Wife's car have gashes in the steering wheel from this.

I may go back to it one day but not soon.

I put the clips - and often, like with Kershaws, the screws in 35mm film cans... I have a collection! Of course, my Buck folders; 110, 503, Vanguard, & 419, never had clips. I even take them off pocket flashlights. Can't stand them!

BTW, the 419 K-P S30V is a looker - and not much harder to pocket than a 110. Oddly, I am not a frame-lock guy - love lockbacks - but the 419 is great.

The horizontal carry nylon sheath solved my problem of hang up when getting in and out of a vehicle.

Carried one on my belt all day today and didn't know it was there. Have the BG42 FG Custom shop 110 in it.

Learning to open and close a 110 one handed, with either hand, solves the problem that one handed knives and clips often cause. Mostly seatbelts for me. When I immediately misplace a clip knife, I go check the seat belt harness. More times than not, it is hanging there.

Learning this activity was also a good mind/motor skills operation for me too. The human mind and body are amazing. DM

I have a really long belt, but all of the belt space that I can reach is already taken by stuff other than knives. Pocket clips aren't ideal, but some are better than others.

uh,,,was that gray, black, or blue duct tape?.... headed to the safe now....
