In just over 2 months, I've gone from Cold Steel and OKC to Colts, Rough Riders, Case and Opinel. And I'm on the lookout for a GEC! And I totally blame you guys here. If you hadn't been so nice and helpful to a newbie, I'd still be into thumbstuds and and pocketclips! Thanks a bunch for making me feel welcome. I'm gonna hang around here from now on since there's still so much more to learn about slipjoints and traditionals. I've caught the bug really bad :p

Understand this completely. The folks on this side of the forum are great. I started off with Spyderco and Benchmade. Next thing I know I am selling those for two Great Easterns. Welcome to the traditional addiction. Just remember to eat between reading, studying patterns, memorizing date stamps, and drooling over all these guys great knives.

You sir are not even close ;) Traditionals are addicting and before you know it, you too will be eating rice and beans to support your traditional habit. :D All kidding aside, welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the traditional side, yatsunil. There seems to be an increasing number of traditional fans coming over, and I can tell you that this is the best forum on the 'net. Great people, the kind of folks you don't mind calling family. Pull up a chair and set a while. The nice thing about traditionals, if you get tired with a pattern, there's 50 more to collect. There's the stockmen, barrows, trappers, jacks of all kinds, congress, pens, copperheads, and all with differing blade shapes and set ups. Clips, spears, wharncliffe's, sheep foot, and more.

That's the problem with traditionals with me, too many great patterns, not enough time and money! :D

Agree 100%. Although it's a little more straight forward with me. I know I prefer a single blade. Spear over clip over spey. I also know I prefer smooth wood covers with Ebony being top. But that's still a lot of knives and not enough time and money!

The forums are full of enablers... Tactical, traditional, even kitchen knives...
And don't you worry, once your appetite will seem to be sated with a bunch of wood handled spear point traditionals, you'll get the itch for custom made ones and customized... :D ;)

Looks like a natural evolution to me.

Most folks today who are just getting into knives would start with a modern folder. Over time those whose tastes are more discriminating would naturally become interested in more refined knives. IMO traditionals are the definition of "refined" when it comes to knives.

It works well for us. Leave all that "tacticool" stuff to the great unwashed. :)

Welcome aboard the Traditional side of the forum. This is a great place and the folks here are like family. The variety in these old classics is mind-boggling. I started out firmly in the single blade camp also, but shocking even to me, I've even evolved now into realizing an extra blade or two is actually nice to have!

Nice, that's been my story as well. Though it's taken me about 4 years to come around to traditionals again. haha. think I'll stay here for a while... lots of great people, knowledge and knives!

"Tacticals" I no longer have...

More customs slippies on the way!

What's been great is that ALL of my custom tactical sales have been NET +$ /in the green to help fund my new slipjoint addiciton :D

You have some very nice knives!
We're on different ends of the price spectrum though. I'm just starting out on the budget end of things although I am on the lookout for a GEC which is like a grail knife to me.

I started out with spyderco and after a few years, finally got my first gec. I have converted. Lots of enablers here indeed

Carry one of each - a modern and a traditional. Many of us here in Traditional use both types of knives. Just look at the "Traditional and Modern Parings" thread running on this page.

That's a good suggestion. Unfortunately it's not such a good idea here in Singapore where the carrying of knives is not the norm. Carrying a knife has already gotten me strange looks. I fear what the reaction will be if I'm seen with two! That's why traditionals appeal to me so much. They look like a souvenir or "toy" knife compared to an all-black modern serrated zombie chopping blade:D And anyway a traditional with a single blade is all I really need everyday for food prep and opening letters and cartons.

I know what you're talking about. I've been to Singapore many many times. One of the strictest places I'd ever been to and that was thirty years ago. Beautiful, great food, plenty to do but restrictive none the less. That said, I'd go back in a flash if the chance ever comes up.
