I just picked up the latest issue of "KNIVES" magazine, one I do not normally buy. The cover caught my eye with the article "Schrade's Meltdown- the inside story". There are actually three seperate articles about Schrade in there. Some quotes from principals of the company and even one of the auctioneers. Pretty interesting reading, though most of it rings a bell from posts here on the forum by Schrade Guy, UHFAN, LT, and others. There are some details that help fill in the gaps a bit, and some interesting history including a photograph of Uncle Henry Baer with Dave Swinden, Wally Gardiner and Jim Economous with a new CNC machine, the Ellenville factory, the Ireland factory, and more. One of the owners of Buck is interviewed on the Walmart market pie and the players there, Schrade, Buck, and Gerber (owned by Fiskers). It is the Feb. 2005 issue, Vol.19, No.1

Here are the author's names... see if they ring a bell?
1. Meltdown - Laurie C. Battles
2. Lifetime of memories of Schrade - Mac Overton
3. Schrade memories pt. 2 - Bruce Voyles

Overton, I am pretty sure, is a staff writer. And Voyles is the Editor.

Just to add a little......

The full title is.. Knives Illustrated, if you're looking for it.
In case (no pun intended) you can't find it, you might contact the magazine website to see if you could buy a copy, or subscribe:

Well, I got my copy the other night at Walmart (formerly Schrademart). I do make money off of every copy sold there. You see, I OWN Walmart! Well, given my wife's monthly expendatures there, you might say I have a substantial monetary investment in the company. :(

I just read about you finding the article. I cannot seem to find the book. Then I had a thought I know how you have hinted about a nice new Schrade hat. Now I would have just given you one but I know how proud you are so I did not want it to seem lke charity for me to just give it to you . Now here is a perfect chance for us both. Since I cannot seem to find the magazine heres the deal. When you finish reading it or find another copy I will swap you the magazine for the hat . Even up. Let me know if the deal appeals to you. By the way there is another 1600T On ebay it might go right since it needs cleaning up but since you want to rehandle it should be no big deal. I also see you have not emailed me since I expressed my views on gun control which had come up in our discussion. I sure don't blame you I can be quite adament regarding laws against tools when they should be against people who use them incorrectly. Let me know on the hat. LT

Lol! LT my man! Glad you climbed over the piles of artifacts to the computer! I have been embroiled in some deep issues having to do with an ex, my own health problems etc. and had not intentionally ignored you. I was not offended at your stance on idiot control. We think more alike than you will ever know. Hang onto the hat. I will send you the magazine. Just e-mail me your address. And the magazine is not charity. See if there is a rusted up beat up full tang carbon blade protruding from one of those piles of treasure and toss it at me. I will keep my eye on the 160 on ebay, and will do my wierd searches to turn up more between now and next summer. Surely they made more that three or four, or the six that one Schradophile here has in his collection. I enjoy the hunt as much as the kill.. er...purchase!

I have missed our e-mail discussions. I suggest they continue at your pleasure. Mail coming your way when address comes my way!

I may be the Schradophile referred to in the above post, the one having 6 160OT's.
If so, then darn but I'm starting to feel a little guilty.
I mean, here's this poor guy Codger, who really wants a 160OT but can't get his hands on one, and here am I with 6 of them, 2 of them being users with modified tips and the other 4 unused (I recently said 3 were unused but now I believe it's 4 - I'll have to dig them out to make sure.)
But - I didn't buy these 160OT's with the intent of trading them or selling them. I bought them a few years ago because I liked them, liked them alot.
They had no particular resale or trade value then. Just good knives at a good price that I liked. So I ended up with 6; it could have been a few more even if there had been anymore around at the various Walmart's I checked out.

So I do feel a little guilty having (hogging?) my Mountain Lion's, but not that guilty that I'll give them up. Nope. ;)

He fades to the left... he fades to the right, he fakes a handoff and runs it in for the score!!! Yaaaaaaaay!!! A perfect grovel deflection if ever I saw one! :D

I most certainly do not blame you for picking a favorite and getting multiples to hang onto. I have the much more rare and desireable 165's myself  and have no immediate plans to part with one.

Thar's more gold where them came from pilgrim. Well... maybe not from Walmart, but "out there". And I will some day get one. It's fun just hunting for one. :D

Oh, and if someone DOES feel that guilty, well...... oh nevermind :footinmou

Don't feel guilty... feel good! Ya got yourself a lifetime supply of 'em and they will make good hand-me-downs.

Good going!

Phil

Words to live by "You can never have enough knives" Original interpretation of quote from GARRAQ born one million BC when a knife was appreciated. Nothing has changed. Remember a good knife is better than a friend if you treat it right you know it will never let you down. We will get one for Codger heck they only made a million or two. Dig deep Codger before it is like buying a painting by Picasso. A year ago I was selling these for 30 bucks. LT

A good knife well cared for is very much like a friend. I still have my first 165OT, now 27 years old, and other than a nice patina, it is as good as the day I bought it. If I loose it tomorrow, I'll use my Schrade lifetime loss guarantee and reach in the box for another one. At this rate, the spare three I have should last me another 81 years. Yep, I need just ONE more! Then I am fixed for life. If I loose that last one before my 168th birthday, well I'll just have to live with it! Heck, I might just dig out my 153's then! Course, I could alternate with 160's and stretch it out even longer before I go to the Gold spikes!

Millions! Wow! I just KNEW thay made more than the few dozen 160's I have seen and read about! :D
