Just finished this one up. I enjoy making these rawhide wrapped sheaths. I think they add a lot to the knife. This one is Alabama damascus, mild steel guard (etched with F.C.), water buffalo short rib bone with ebony spacer.

Any and all comments welcome. Critiques encouraged.

Thanks,
SDS

Thanks guys. The rawhide is sure different to work with but I really like the way it looks when it's finished.

great looking knife, im knew to all this so forgive the ignorance but what is alabama damascus. and how can you tell. again great knife.

Bowhunter, welcome to the forum and thanks for the compliment. Alabama damascus simply refers to who made the particular piece of damascus I used to make this knife. There are a lot of different makers of damascus and since I did not make the damascus myself it is only right that I give credit to the person who did.

You can do a search (google for instance) of damascus and you will see a lot of difference in the patterns as well as the quality. If this doesn't answer your question, or if you have other questions, please feel free to ask me here, in my subforum, or take advantage of the HUGE knowledge base here and ask in the makers section (this would be my suggestion) or general knife forum. There are a lot of great folks here and information is always freely given.

Thanks again,
SDS

I really like the entire package and the hawk used as a prop. Is the hawk yours as well? I want to try the rawhide wrap sheath too, I think it adds a lot to the period pieces. Nice work!

Thank you for the compliment. There are some things I would change if I were doing it again but overall I was happy with the results.

I wish I could make a hawk that well. The hawk was made by Dee Hinck (sp?) from Montana I believe. I've never met him but he and a man who taught me to make knives were good friends. My friend, George Englebretson, gave me the hawk as a gift after one of his trips to the Ft. Bridger rendezvous.

If you are interested in the rawhide sheaths I cannot recommend Mr. Cohea's tutorial enough. If you go the sheath forum you should be able to find it there. If you have trouble finding it let me know and I'll try to find a link to it for you.
