My dad picked me up a Frontier knife at a auction for about 2 bucks a few weeks back. Its not in terrible condition but I wouldn't say its anything great either. I can't get pictures until I get home next weekend but in general what is the best way to clean up an "older" blade? Its going to need a good sharpening too but thats going to have to wait until I get my lansky.

I have several Frontier knives (50+) and what ever you do to clean any other knife will work on a Imperial Frontier Powderhorn. I nonmally start with a fine 400 grit sand paper. I run the blade across the sand paper to remove the rust off the high carbon steel. I then use a 600 grit to polish the blade. The blosters I polish on a buffing wheel which I also use on the Delrin scales. I use the Lansky at the 25 setting to sharpen the blade. For more Frontier info see http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/frontiers/index.htm Now with all that info head over to the Schrade area of the forum. If you do a search for my name you will find pictures of my Frontiers (some before and after).

Pics would indeed be helpful. You'll get lots of good advice here, but some may be overkill, depending on the condition of your knife.

Very generally speaking, my cleaning routine usually involves flushing out the joints & gaps with WD-40 or similar, then washing the knife in hot water with dish detergent like Ivory liquid or Dawn. Rinsing in hot water afterwards will warm up the internals and help evaporate off residual moisture. Dry everything you can reach with paper towels, rags, etc. Then re-lubricate the joints with your preferred oil or other lube. If the knife is very rusty, that's where some more aggressive methods might be used, like steel wool, sandpaper, etc. Don't want to rush into that, if it's more than what's necessary. But, I'd post those pics first and take some time to read other suggestions, as they come.

OwE, I agree with you as I do all of that after I am done with the buffing and before the sharpening. Most of the frontiers I find need a bit of rust removal.

Here are some pictures of one of my knives.

Very nice! Is that a full-size folding hunter? I take it from your earlier post, these are Schrade-produced. I have a couple 25OTs, and similar FH models from Case & Queen. One of my favorite patterns.

Yes, it is 5 1/4 closed. There is a lot of debate if these are Camillus or Schrade. I think I saw a Camillus S cards for a lot of the Frontiers. I believe the Schrades have a lanyard hole.
