Wow, nice "mod." Really looks much better than the stock 'hawk. Would you mind sharing your technique for getting the "rustic" effect on the 'hawk?

No problem, it was simple.

I don’t have lots of tools so I used what I have. I do have an electric sander and that helped with a couple of things.

I took the set screw out and disposed of it. I had to whittle a little of the wood at the top of the haft to make it fit well. The use of an electric sander helped with this. I sanded the coating off with 50 grit sandpaper and then 150. Took a file to the edge and then proceeded to convex it on 400 and 650 grit sandpaper then added some file work to it. I cut the handle down from 22 inches-long to 16 inches-long and saved some weight too. I sanded the haft down with 50 grit sandpaper and applied some wood stain I’ve had for years (Minwax-Colonial Maple).

Nothing big, it is a user and this is the best it will ever look.

doesnt the frontier hawk have a hammer head... thing on the back? that looks more like a norse hawk to me. Either way it looks sharp man.

Cool. Here's my Frontier and Rifleman. Stripped off with a brass wire wheel on a hand drill, fast. Wipe liquid gun blue on it a few times, when dry, wipe on a light oil. Slip head off, rat tail file inner neck if needed. Slather gobs of liquid silicone on wooden shaft by head, slide head up, slam down to set, redo set screw. Leave hawk in a warm place for 3-5 days for silicone to dry. Rifleman hasn't loosened in about three years and the Frontier is still tight a year later. And I chop with them, no throwing. Make sure that you shove liquid silicone into any air pockets after the head is set, then just wipe off the outer excess and leave it to cure. Use clear liquid silicone. I bet that bathtub caulking would likely work also, experiment.

B.T.W., top pics look like a Norse hawk and your mods are on a New Frontier I believe, like mine. Which B.T.W. is a very affordable, quite light, handy little hawk. It processed wood quicker for a fire than my Becker Brute in a chop off because it had the advantage of lever action to break hold and re swing. I find the Rifleman to be way too heavy to hump around and fatiguing to use. It bites harder and deeper though. Nice to see your mods bud, it is quite handsome, and useful.

Good looking mod. It definitely looks much better this way. Looks like a great user.

Nice work.
FYI, the Trailhawk & the Rifleman's hawk both have the hammer poll. The norse hawk is different from the frontier in that the top edge sweeps up instead of the flat on the frontier hawk.

great job on the mod.

Why did you shorten the handle? I've always felt a light hawk like these benefit from the longer handle so i was just curious what your thoughts were.

I wanted a lighter compact tool to fit in my pack, I hate wearing things on my belt like knives or machetes.
I read that Horace Kephart used a 12oz tomahawk head on a 12" haft, perfect for chopping kindling and splitting.

Well I can't argue with Kephart:D It would be cool to see what his hawk was like. It amazes me how much these guys could do with such light weight tools.

Top "before" pic is the older model frontier hawk, which had a slight flare on the top. I had that model and ground it flat, it looks much better, imho.
Good job on the mods, there's a huge mod thread for all these cold steel hawks stickied in the axe and tomahawk forum, if anyone is interested in seeing more.

Good catch on the correction. I'm always correct....whenever I'm not incorrect. :D
