HAHAHAHA! I know I got some folks attention didn't I? J/K

Okay, I am a newbie. My passion is shooting/firearms but I am really starting to want to learn about knives. Maybe build a few kits to learn/have fun and add some classic tactical folders or fixed blades to my nominal collection.

Anyways, I did what every newbie geek does, I watched the CutleryCorner.net on DirectTV one late evening. I bought a few cheapo tacticals to start my newbie collection and add to my oldies. BEFORE YOU SLAY ME: I knew what I was buying: bottom line, flea market quality campfire/deer camp tacticals.

My take...cheap but not that bad. I will try and skin my next deer with them this season to see how they perform in the field. It may take all 3 blades that I got for the outrageously good price.....but that buck will be skinned!

Anyway my new bladeforums friends...I have started at the bottom and look to be movin' on up. Next stop, Spyderco or more Gerbers to add to my trusty worn Gerbers that I have in my ancient and feeble herd (gotta say, carried my Gerber's in the Army....never let me down...luv em).

Frost cutlery ruuuuuuules. Your expensive Benchmade......well, okay maybe it doesn't drool.....maybe I am a tad bit jealous. Especially if you post pics to taunt me and tell me how kewl your collection is and what not.

PS: Be warned...if your collection is too kewl...I will retaliate with my Glock collection power of lethality and badness!

aw come on he's not a troll he just pretended to be. actually I found his introduction much more entertaining than the average "hi my name is John and I like knives!". welcome to BF gatorglockman, there is a ton of information here and the more you learn the more you'll want to spend :D. Move past the Gerber and check out some Spydercos, Benchmades and Kershaws. They're all great companies with excellent quality, value, warranties and customer support.

Thanks gents.

Come on man....I am not a troll....never loose your sense of humor bubba. The title and commentary was a teaser.

Seriously, I am interested in learning how to do some basic builds with some kits that are out there so that I can have fun. Read some of the volumes of starter stickies that are posted. Pretty awesome resource guide. Looking forward to trading info with folks.

Hello and welcome....

knifekits.com has some nice stuff and they're not too hard to assemble. I've thought about building one or two but never got around to it.

I watch the re-broadcast of cutlery corner every Monday morning, mostly for entrtainment..... But I will say this, if you're planning to use those flea market knives to clean game , I would suggest you buy a Buck 110 for $29.99 at Gander Mountain. It will be the best investment you ever made and will be worth more than 20 X the price of a $5.00 knife. One of the worse experiences I ever had was trying to skin a deer with a cheap knife.

If you happen to be near a WalMart pick up a Kershaw Storm II for about $35.00, it will look familiar because Frost has a clone they sell on CCN for about $5.00. But you'll be amazed at the quality of the Kershaw knife.

Welcome, Gatorglockman! Good to see another member from AL.

My take...cheap but not that bad.
Yeah, we get all caught up in our high end production or custom knives, with exotic handle materials and the latest super-steel and tend to forget that you don't really need a $150+ folder to open your mail or cut up an apple.

Next stop, Spyderco or more Gerbers to add to my trusty worn Gerbers that I have in my ancient and feeble herd (gotta say, carried my Gerber's in the Army....never let me down...luv em).
I think my first "good" folder was a Gerber LST. It was my EDC for several years and never let me down. I've also got one of the early Gerber Multi-tools that has been my go-to MT for the last decade. Not the most cutting edge products, perhaps, but mostly good knives for the money (unfortunatly, I hear their MT quality has taken a nose dive. Pitty. :().

Ever since I picked up my first Spyderco Police model back in the day, however, Spyderco has probably been my favorite production knife company. I just love their innovative products, and the "spyder-hole" just works better for me than any thumb-stud or flipper system for one-hand opening. They have a nice range of prices on their products, too. For EDC my favorite is probably one of my Spyderco Delicas, some models of which you can sometimes find new for as little as $50.

Especially if you post pics to taunt me and tell me how kewl your collection is and what not.
I have not taken any pics of the "collection" recently. Maybe I'll see what I can to when I get home tonight. :p

Be warned...if your collection is too kewl...I will retaliate with my Glock collection power of lethality and badness!
Bring it!!! :D

I would not call it a collection, but I've got me a G17 and G21, and I've been sniffing around for a G30 or G36 recently (damn gun shortage!)

i love wacthin' Tom Odell hawkin' frost cutlery.
knife comedy, you bet.
Frost and Smoky Mountain sell some real shit, but there is a market for it:yawn:

it does amaze me sometimes, who buys this stuff???

knives are knives

lots of knives made in china are pretty decent.

the slippys made in China work O.K. for pocket totin'
quality is relative.
Spyderco knives are outstanding.
Benchmade knives , never heard of a benchmade that was not perfect out of the box
so there you have it
:confused::eek::D:)

(( cross-forum sale is a bad example under any circumstances ))

WOW....thanks for the welcome and hospitality gang. Thanks for the tips and good starter recommendation! Yeah, I am with some of you, the Knife show is redneck tv at its' very best. I could not resist a basic purchase just to see what they had. I won't buy anymore...again...just good ol cheapo's that I won't cry over if I screw up.

I did look at the Kershaws in an Academy Sports I frequent. Pretty nice quality to price. Spyderco Enduras and Delicas look to be something I must check out closely. Not sure about buying/paying for a Benchmade yet....need to savor the purchase on that one so I can appreciate it more.

Bladefoolish....oh, I've got 1911's too man....personally building a custom 1911 at this time as well. Price to quality, I just love my Glocks though man. Use mine in IDPA matches.

Thanks for the hearty welcome and feedback gang! Looking forward to learning and laughing some.

Welcome to the forum :)

My suggestion for anyone new to the hobby, get a nice selection of quality/affordable blades. This will give you a taste of each, and to refine your tastes.

Personally, I would suggest getting:

Spyderco Delica4 (or Endura4 if you want a larger blade)
Benchmade mini Griptilian (or fullsized)
Kershaw OD-1

All of these are very high quality and very affordable :) In addition, they all have very different "feels" to them.

Anyhoot, welcome to the madness.

Welcome fellow Glockonisseur. Right on the money man. The knife show on tv is like a disasterous train/semi/cattle accident. You CANNOT take eyes away. I had a relative who was buyin up Earnhardt commemorative knives like they were replacing gold. Yep, collector tins and all. Still has them too. Too bad he has got sons that are in line for those babies. I dare you not watch the knive show. You can't do it.
