Frost Fixed Blade Tanto

Frost Cutlery. 420HC steel if memory serves. The kind you can get at homeshopping network. I wouldn't put too much faith in it. But for $7, I guess you could always use it for decoration purposes.

Typical BS and elitest reply.
These older Frost Japan products are well made.
420hc? That's what Benchmade was using in its fixed blades 15 years ago.
That's an atractive piece - nice find.

I think you're going to find this "knife" to be made of 420J2 and of horrible quality. If it's not too late to back out, do it now!

BS ? Elitest ? Since when saying things as they are became BS and elitest ?

Apparently it's 420J2, not 420HC like I said. Why don't you try to cut somethin with it and try to sharpen it. You'll see what I mean.

If it is only 15 years old, personally I would stay away from it. If you want a frost that was well made (which is much better, but by no means perfect) I would have to go back at least 20 years. If you do not mind spending $7.00 not a big deal then.

WE shall see. The main reason I picked it up was because it is an older Frost knife adn I've heard them to be half decent, I mean the balis are hot items. But then again, that doesnt mean its quality.
Ah well, pocket change.

Hey for $7 what do you expect? And if it does turn out to be a good one, then more power to him!

If it doesn't work out......re-auction it off and get your money back.

The steel could be no-name off a wrecked Pakistani auto body, so what? So for $7 you've got a beater.

Frost has no good reputation at all, but if it looks good, maybe you can hang it on a wall or dig in the garden. You don't have to justify a $7 purchase, but I wouldn't pay much more than that for Frost.

Now Frosts with an s is a Swedish company that makes excellent and inexpensive knives. Don't confuse them.

It is not elitist, though, to warn someone aobut a general lack of quality from a given company. He came here asking. It would be unkind not to tell the truth.

The truth is - older Frost Japan product has nothing in common with the Pakistan Frost being offered on the Shopping Network.

Frost still has many of their better knives made in Japan. The steel that is used for these knives is listed as 440, which probably means that it is 440A. For $7.00 you got yourself an all right knife.

Thats what Im hoping for, the "made in Japan" stamp. Was the Paki frost even around 15 to 20 years ago? And if they were, were they in the same buisiness of crappy knives as they are now?

SO I finally recieved this knife in the mail. First impresssions are quite good.

It is a relatively heavy weight knife with a full tang and nickel bolsters. The handle appears to be some type of wood secured with nickel pins. Its never been used and the blade grind is quite straight. In terms of cutting edge, well, its grind is a hairline profile double ground with a sharp edge. NOt super duper sharp, but sharp none the less. THe sheath is quite durable and definetly real leather, but Im not sure if it was the original. Tang stamps are "frost cutlery" "surgical steel" and a "japan" etching that was buffed out.

Bad things about it:
The NIckel is tarnished but hey, thats cosmetic.
The handle pins holding the wood are loose in that I can move them slightly. None can be fully removed however.
THe edge on this thing is the most minimal attempt at an edge. It is extremely thin.
The flat on the front of the blade has strange pits that are extremely superficial but still completely polished.

Over all, I like the knife because its a fixed tanto. THe blade is well ground aside from the edge and is a little over 1/8th inch thick. It feels good in the hand and even better on the wallet.
As to overall quality, Id say the the previous statements about it being a good digging knife are rather false but then again, I dont have any better knife to comapre it to. At the very least, its not a peice of crap paki knife.

You sure did not get hurt at 7 bucks. The last Frosts I had that were what I would call a good knife was Parker-Frost that me and my cousin used to buy and collect back about 1978-1980.A bitch to sharpen but made well and 3.00 to 5.00 each at flea markets.
