Looking for opinions on which offers (dare I say) better quality, Frost or Rough Riders. I know they're imports and inexpensive. My questions are: Of the two, is there a majority favoring one over the other ? And is there a model line that gets more attention to detail such as the steel warrior or uncle lucky line up for Frost. Appreciate the advice.

rough rider! I havent bought any of the Steel warrior (frost) The 2 patterns my son and i have purchased are top notch, i was pleasantly surprised fit and finish were very good and my sons fancy bolster lockback was shave sharp outta the box, nice knife and cant beat the price point. Especially with the average 11 year old stash of cash:D I bought a baby sunfish with tortoise scales, fit and finish was excellent wasnt all that sharp but sharpens up nicely. If ya can get past them being an import from china they make excellent users and good knives to build future knife knutz:D
Not to mention the range of patterns is rather impressive, elephant toes, sunfish, marlin spikes... I hope somebody stateside brings back the elephant toe and the marlin spike.
all the best

The Rough Rider is the favorite Chinese low dollar brand of the forum. The Steel Warrior line from Frost also have favorable things said about them. US Classics are mentioned only once in a while and not as well liked as RR. Of all the Chinese knives I have purchased, my favorite is the Browning Congress pattern, a few more dollars than the typical RR or SW but very nicely made. I have also tried Remington, S&W, Mossberg, Marbles, Colt, Owl Head and some others that I cannot think of at the moment but the Browning is by far the best quality. It is better than my tortoise shell stockman pattern RR that I picked up at a gunshow a while back to give the brand a try. I have never heard comments on the anniversary models from Frost that Smokey Mountain catalogs. One of the dealers I have seen at gunshows has them and states that they are the best of the cheaper slipjoints but they are too ornate for my tastes.

Is that the Browning Aztec Congress 215 w/ zebra wood and stag that you are speaking of?

The Steel Warrior and Rough Riders I have been pretty much equal, but the Steel Warriors have sometimes had better overall fit, especially the handle scales.

I still hate that name on a traditional slipjoint though!!!

I have several of each. I can tell you that I prefer the steel warriors because I think they have a little more consistent fit and finish. They also seem to come sharper and hold an edge a little longer. For my money though, I prefer the kissing cranes from SMKW. I purchased the modified mini trapper in yellow. I has really held up. I Prefer it to some of my "better" knives. It is worth way more to me than the 14 dollars I gave for it.

Morablades, I have a couple of Boker Tree Brand Barlows I like. How do the Magnums compare (1) to Boker's German-made models (if you happen to own any) and (2) to Rough Riders?

I have owned a few of all that you've mentioned. The German made Bokers are always better by far. The Magnums only come in stag and red bone. The stag is ok, but the red bones that I have had were nice and dark, almost like the color of blood. On both options the scales matched very well. I have never had mismatched scales on a Boker:thumbup: I almost always get a mismatched scales on Rough Riders and I can't stand that. I'd consider Magnum to be right there with RR on edge holding capability and fit and finish, but the Magnums I found harder to sharpen.

I have used both. Use to favor the Steel Warrior, as their Saddlehorns are excellant in fit & finish. But have you seen these latest RR in India Deer Stag? They can be sharpened to a scarey razor's edge,,,,and the stag is most impressive.

I have RRs in Saw Bone, which is a more 'expensive' line.
And Steel Warriors in bone.

The RR in Sawbone is a far better and solid knife, with both the fit of the blades and the finish being superior to Steel Warrior.

I have a smooth orange bone medium stockman by RR that looks as good and has great fit and finish as most of my NAME knives.

Truth be told, knives made in China are getting better. It is interesting to know about Browning, I might give them a try. It is getting harder and harder to find knives that are not made in China. Just think a few years ago, if we mentioned Buck, Marbles, Remington, Kissing Crane or Scharde, we don't think Chinese, do we.

I have a few Buck knives made in China and they seem to be fairly well made. I bought a Fox-N-Hound with stag years ago and it was from Italy and I liked it and bought another, only this time it was made in China, well it turns out it was a pretty good knife. I recently bought another stag Fox-N-Hound expecting it to be made from China and it was from Pakistian. I was a little dissapointed it was not from China.

They have come a long way from the junk they were making, 10 years ago, heck even 5 years ago. Of course I still like knives made from USA, Germany and Spain, but they are harder and harder to find.
