Has anyone tried out the new Lip Balm Load Bearing System from Frost River?

Living in a very arid part of the country, I find that lip balm is essential or my lips will qucikly turn to beef jerky when I'm spending time outdoors. The problem is that with everything else in my pockets and/or in my pack, I'm always digging for that little tube of lip balm, and half the time I either can't find it, or realize I left it at home. It's frustrating to say the least, and I've been trying to figure out a better way to always keep my lip balm on my person (like all my most important survival gear) and just as importantly - keep it easily accessible so that I don't have to stop and take my pack off to find it, etc.

I've been really impressed with the other Frost River items I've owned - both in terms of their old-school durability, and their well thought-out designs. So I wasn't too surprised to find out that FR has beat me to the punch on this particular idea, and made it even better than I could have imagined.

Like all FR products, the LBLBS is built out of traditional materials that have stood the test of time, and its built to last. You'll probably be passing this down to your grandkids some day:

One of the things I really like about the FR LBLBS is that it doesn't interfere with wearing a backpack or a haversack. It also keeps my lip balm "front and center" - right where I need it, when I need it.

Retention is very snug when you first get it, but this is normal and will loosen up a little over time.

It's also very adjustable to acommodate a variety of sizes. And they aren't kidding when they say "load bearing" - this rig can really take some weight, and you hardly even notice it's there. While I haven't experimented with attaching other components to it yet, I think you could probably carry a lot more than just lip balm with this setup. At the very least, I'm thinking I can attach my knife/sheath, and my waist-belt "essentials" kit, and when I'm really going fast and light, I might not even need to carry a backpack.

Shoulder straps are well padded, helping with load bearing as well:

I haven't been using it long, but all in all I'm really impressed with the LBLBS so far. It addresses a really common, basic need in a functional way, while allowing for lots of customization and versatility. I look forward to seeing what kinds of hacks and mods develop over time as more people use this system, and I'll be posting some pics soon of my mods as well. Anyone else have one yet?

That's heirloom quality kit right there. :D
I bet you could use it as a back harness for your axe with a few PALS straps.

I'll definitely be getting one.

Very cool!

I too swear by lip balm, although my solve a while back was to make it into a lanyard or something I couldn't lose. Added a bike innertube to retain some cotton (fluffed some out for illustravtive purposes) and threw in a esee fire steel from the izua 2 kit. Easy to wear as a lanyard, clipped to carbiner. I love the holster idea a lot though! Always liked the aesthetic of FR stuff. Curious how that harness effects caryring a sheath knife or does it ride just far enough above the hip?

Cool idea! Yeah, I think you could pretty easily attach that to the back of the LBLBS.

I think I'm going to just attach the sheath directly to the wasitbelt on the LBLBS, since I don't really foresee taking the harness off while I'm in the woods. It would probably work well with a 'baldric' type knife carrying system as well.

A load bearing system?

Years working as a construction carpenter with heavy tool pouches and nail bags

A pair of suspenders on a wide leather belt works very well and is inexpensive

I live in (a cold) desert too, so what is your favorite lip balm Smithhammer?

Powerful enough to pack lip balm. Discerning enough to use Blistex. Impressive.

Must say that Canada's national radio broadcaster CBC caught me a few years ago on April Fools' Day with the announcement that the nation had voted to discontinue the penny. Made abundant sense to me. Well, flash forward, I can't even offer my 2 cents worth anywhere anymore now, can I?

Patent the lip balm harness pattern asap before, you know, 'they' do.

Bravo!

Sir your man card has been cancelled... Permanantly
:D

No! Not permanantly!

I'm open to suggestions for a more 'manly' brand of lip balm, but as me gran-pappy used to always say,

You know what kind of hat a real man wears?

Any got-dam hat he wants to, thank you very much.
