Hello all,
I noticed that Frosts Mora knives are offered in different steels such as carbon, carbon laminated, stainless, "high carbon stainless" (priced a bit higher than similar "stainless" models); dose anyone know exactly what these steels are in terms of designation or elemental make up? Thanks.

This doesn't answer your question, but I recommend the Erikkson Moras over the Frost version (both high carbon steel). The steel seems to be better at edge holding on the Erikkson, and the sheath, though still plastic, is WAY better. I was continually losing my Frost Mora due to that crappy sheath...

I understand that Frosts' standard stainless is Sandvik 12C27, a fine grained, highly corrosion resistant steel developed specifically for cutlery. Easy to sharpen, holds a very good edge. I don't know what their 'high carbon' stainless would be. The laminated blades are actually made in France, according to Ragnar at Ragweedforge.com. As for their regular carbon steel, I don't know the specs but suspect it is similar to 1095. I thought all of the cutlery firms in Mora used the same components and steels, but I could be wrong. Ericksson blades tend to be a tad thicker than Frosts, but I don't think they offer a laminated blade (my favorite).

It used to say on the Frosts site that the stainless was Sandvik - now it just says Swedish steel (or did).
The carbon and laminated carbon are my favorites and work very well if you take time to flatten the bevels and bring the edge back just a tad.
I have more expensive knives and more rugged knives - but I'm not sure that I have any better knives than Moras - for their intended purpose.

Thanks for the replies!
Jimbo, thanks for the links. The Frosts site (in the Knife Care section) says that 12C27 is used "almost solely" by them with a -80 deg. C heat treatment and a HRC of 57-8.
Dose anyone know who sells the Eriksson Moras in the U.S.? Thanks again.

I can't comment on what stainless steels they use (sandvik seems most likely), just on the carbon steels. I have a couple of moras from each company and the erikkson blows the frost away. I don't know if the frost is burring more when I sharpen it, but it loses the shaving edge really fast, whereas the erikkson just keeps on ticking even through splitting kindling, making fuzz sticks, cutting food, etc...I fully admit the difference may soley be my own sharpening methods working better with the erikkson, or something like that, but there is a major difference in performance for me...

I have 2 of the laminated moras from frost and they seem to be better than the plain ones.

you can get the erikkson mora from www.ragweedforge.com , that's where I got mine....
