Ok, I have been looking in to FRS and GMRS radios. I think I am leaning towards the Motorola Talkabout Distance Radios. The transmit with 2 watts rather than the .5 of the FRS units. I found them on sale at Botach. http://www.botachtactical.com/mottaldisrad.html

So does anyone out there have them? If so how do you like them? What about licencing? I know we have a licence here at work, someone told me I could use them under that licence?

Brock,
I've had a pair of the smaller (.5 watt) units for a couple of years now and really like them. These are the predecessors to the more ergonomic Talk About model that's now popular. Mine basically look like a shorter version of the ones you've linked us to on the Botach site. I don't use them all the time by any means, but my brothers and I find them particularly useful when we have a couple of vehicles on the road enroute to the mountains for the latest camping, hunting or skiing trip. They're good at coordinating food, fuel and restroom stops between multiple vehicles on long distance trips, while saving on cell phone roaming charges.

I'd also recommend getting the little ear piece and press-to-talk microphone accessory. It comes in very handy when driving and helps you to hear over the ambient road noise.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe there are any frequency licensing issues associated with either of these units as sold to the general civilian market. It's a good question to ask though because you can never be sure exactly which version of the radio Botach is selling. I would imagine they could fill you in though.
