Need advice on what to use to sharpen my Benchmade GIN-1 blade?
I have tried everything to sharpen it to a shaving edge but no
success. Please help.I emailed benchmade and they suggested this
website. They said I might have to send it back to have it tested
to make sure the steel is not to hard.Any suggestions?

There are many problems that could be preventing you from getting a sharp edge, however more detail is needed on exactly what is happening. Can you raise a burr for example? I would suggest reading Joe Talmadge's sharpening faq :

and if you still have no success try to be more descriptive about what you are doing and what is happening. The magic marker trick alone Joe describes solves the majorty of sharpening problems.

Michael,

I sharpen other folks knives as a hobby and like to keep my own knives sharp. However, a few years ago when Benchmade first came out with ATS34 blades I bought one because I hadn't had any experience with that steel. That is the worst knife I have ever had save one or two real cheapos. I think it is the temper. It is hard to sharpen and doesn't stay sharp. Since then I have had other ATS 34 knives, custom and production, and I liked the way the steel sharpens up. The point of this is I will not buy a Benchmade again. Narrow minded? Maybe, my choice.

Maybe GIN-1 is altogether different but here are some references that may help. GIN-1 is reputed to be a good stainless.

Included are sharpening sites, techniques and equipment, as well as discussions on knife steel & steel composition charts. I am a personal fan of D2. Having spent a career in the military and now out in the woods goofing off with the dogs I find D2 my personal favorite for edge holding, ease of sharpening (if you like to sharpen) and durability.

you might have to change the angle if you're looking for a very sharp knife
