Just went to a local knife shop to buy my brother a diamond steel and was quite upset to here the dumba** salesman badmouthing Khukuris:mad: The stupid SOB didn't know his you know what from a hole in the ground. I told him "well, the indian ones may be junk but the HI are top notch etc..." He says yeah especially since they are made in a hut and heat treated with a blow torch! Then he proceeded to tell me that using water to quench the blade as the kamis do will cause thousands of stress fractures resulting in a weakened blade!

My big pet peeve is this: If you don't know what you are talking about shut up. Period. Don't bad mouth someone else's work/company when you have no @%!^$#@ idea about that which you speak. I told them I would bring an HI khuk in next time I go, but the hell with them. Besides, I'm afraid they might insult my blades to my face and the khukuri would DEMAND a blood attonement. Oh, incidently after the guy said that the blades were weak I said that I would bet that my khukuri would out perform ANY knife in his store in a "toughness/endurance test" this surprised him and he didn't have much to say after that.

Ok, rant over.:D

We would have egged you on until we were all in jail.;)

Sounds almost like my very last experience at Sears when I crumpled up in pieces their plastic credit card and then put out my hand. The manager put his hand out and I dropped the pieces in his hand and said some more things that aren't printable here.
I have not and will Not Ever go back to Sears again. If they come out with a tool I just absolutely GOTTA Have I will send one of my friend's who still goes there. One of these days if the list keeps getting shorter we may have to hire a service to go to Sears for us. :D

Bruddah, you don' let opportunity pass you by - you allasame ignore it :D
The scam goes "I'll put up $50 that a Khukuri will out chop (or whatever) any knife in your store", set a time and place, and show up with an 18" AK. These people are too stupid to feel embarrassment, but they can be bled without opening their skin. That is the magic of the blade, HEHEHEhehe

Some birds beg to be plucked, but sheep were born to be shorn:rolleyes:

Rob, I hear you sir! In effect, he didn't just disparage Khukuris, he insulted the Kamis and the integrity of our online community... since many of us see this place as an extended family thing, your anger at his words is heart felt.

...uhmmm, well, I guess I'm sort of an estranged, errr strange, ahhh ok, just plain deranged, family member :D

Rob,

Luckily you are in Main...in Tx them be fightn' words. :p ;)

My suggestion is count the number of days the knife store stays in business. Online stores are getting more popular all the time and can almost always beat the socks off any storefront in the price dept.

Hey Rob,

Maybe you should take a Video Camera and a 15" AK out into the woods and make a video about how strong and totally cool an HI 15" AK is. Then you could show the guy at the store the Video and help him understand that HI makes GREAT:) Khuks!

MauiRob,

I am with Walosi. Just go back and restart the debate in a nice crowded store, then pull out some notes and ask the other guy if he is willing to back up his mouth up with a few $$. That is the easiest way to finance your next khukuri.

If you told me six months ago that my favorite pieces of cutlery was going to be made from recycled leaf springs, in the one of the poorest contries in the world and by people in a hut...

Then there are those people who constantly harp about things hand forged.

I dunno. In this world of CNC machines and power tools, people are skeptical of things made in the traditional manner. This only means one thing. More khuks for me :)

I think an "In Store Demonstration" should be made. "And note sir, how my blade is undamaged after chopping this display case into kindling":p I am sure we will all chip in to help you post bail.

We would have egged you on until we were all in jail.

Yup. You're probably right about that one!:D Of course I could just tell Rusty that the shop owner used to be a cardiac specialist until he got fired for malpractice;):pThen all we'd need is towels to clean up the mess:D Come to think of it, that might be enough for Uncle too!

Darn good idea Wal!! If he takes that bet I'll have to have someone photograph it so I can post the pics of "the great chop-off"!:D

Yeah, I realize that this is a common enough sentiment in todays world, but there's a time to speak such thoughts and a time to keep it to yourself. The man in the knife store chose the wrong time/person to say that to, and more importantly, chose to say it in a disrespectful manner to me, who had obviously plunked down a sizable chunk of change for my khuk collection.

Ten years ago and they might have been here too;):D

:D ROTFLMAO!:D

Rob, your story reminds me of one of my Cherokee Grandmother's favorite sayings to cover situations like this and here it is:

"Never argue with a fool. I can't tell you why but he will."

Where can I contribute to the Mauirob legal defence fund?

We'll make T-shirts with an AK on the front and "Free Mauirob" on the back :D

We have a saying in France " you don't negotiate with a wheelbarrow, it's meant to be pushed". Rather than argue( rightfully) that our HI Khucs are the best, I suggest that you shave this gentleman's wiskers during a test with one of our blades. Then if he still argue, you can offer to slice in one light cut what ever is leftn of his dignity for good measures. Don't waste your time with this bonehead. Fact is your great-grandchildren will still enjoy the use of your Khucs long after you and I are long gone but this guy's legacy will remian as one giant B..hole

Ignore the fool. Modern laws dont allow for appropriate retribution, so its not worth raising the blood pressure.

I vote for a return to duelling myself. A duelling society is most certainly a polite one.

There was a time not too long ago when I would have brought my best Khuks with me to show the guy he was wrong, but not now. I don't like the fact that he's badmouthing HI products, but at the same time, the kind of people who would take his advice don't deserve to own them anyway. Or they at least have some learning and growing up to do before they should own them. I bought my first HI khuk when I was in that category, but luckily was educated by you all in the meantime;)

I'm not really angry anymore, but I still wish people would do their homework before badmouthing someone else's work/art. Word of mouth can be very powerful in helping or hurting a company. I realize that HI is doing very well, but there are other smaller(local) companies that could be put out of business by a blowhard in a position of influence (although not very influencial) like that.

Best case scenario: the guy heard what I said about Uncle Bill's guarantee policy, orders one. Finds out they really ARE great, and changes his tune. You never know...but we can hope;) second best scenario: he runs into another HI customer with a worse temper:D ;) :p

It occurred to me that this guy is a business owner who gets a margin of profit for the knives he sells. If he started steering people to HI, Uncle Bill would benifit but not him. He may very well know that HI products are superior but it is against his business interests to admit that anything other than what he is selling is any good. I still think that if this is the case then he should focus on only the positive aspects of what he sells and not badmouth the competition.

Rob,
I know how you feel. I have been in a certain knife store in a yuppie town just north of Portland. Not to name the store. One of the youngish employees noticed the clip of my new Bladeforums Red/Black Sifu that I was carrying that day, and asked if he could see it. He proceeded to whip the blade out with all the force he could muster. SNAP! It did not hurt the Sifu, but he then got a lesson from me in the finer points of handling another persons knives. The public chastizing did his ego no good. It seems that Maine needs a good knife store, with people manning the counters that know, love and respect knives. Without talking down to the customers, as the persons it this shop did. I find it is fun to go in and keep silent for awhile and feel out the knowledge of the people that will be waiting on me and decide if I should even engage the people in conversation, or just look, and leave, buying somewhere else later. It is lucky for some of these fools that WE have learned lessons in manners andself restraint. Although there is a certain satisfaction in embarressing a fool in public. You did the right thing Rob. It is hard to rise above the fools sometimes. By the way, what area of Maine are you in? I am in southern Maine. York County.
