Frustration - Knife #8 Ruined

So I just thought I would share my frustration here.

I was working on finishing up a knife this morning, my first hidden tang and first guard for that matter. I have been working on this knife for a couple months and have been learning a ton. After re-doing the guard a couple of times, lots of broken jeweler's saw blades, I had got the guard fitted and soldered, and stag handle glued up. Here is where it was at yesterday.

Well this morning I was touching up some texturing I had done on the blade and guard on my bench anvil. There was one spot where the guard and ricasso met I was trying to touch up. Well lets just stag handles do not like being dropped. It now has some pretty good cracks in it right where the spacers meet the stag. :(

It sucks and is very frustrating, but I learned a lot making this one. Although I would love to try and fix this one or make it better, I know that I won't be happy with the end result. And with the amount of time I would probably have to spend on it, I could probably be close to done on another knife. At least I can still sharpen up the blade and test the HT I did on it. :)

Thanks Daniel. The guard was a little tough. I had to redo it a couple of times, but finally got it to where I was satisfied.

If you want some more stag pieces, let me know. I have lots and no real use for them.

Sorry to hear this Justin. You jumped in with both feet for sure, sometimes the water is shallow and sometimes it is deep. I learn a lot more when things don't go as planned, than when everything goes smooth.

As Daniel says, Keep at it!

+1 ...i never learn anything when things turned out the way i wanted initially. far better to find out something new by surprise. the lesson seems to stick so much better.

Boy, isn't that just the Truth!
