From the main forum:

Hey man. Missed you around. Everything alright?

Wanted to ask you a little bit about tomahaks. I heard you were the expert.

Interested in a hand-forged, traditional (not tactical and all that), not coming out of a factory and reasonably priced one.

I don't really care for throwing, I would mainly use it as a general-purpose tool in the woods. I don't think I need one to complement my Bonecutter, but oh well.

I was contemplating Wolf Creek Forge and Brian Otto's. With the first guys, not sure whether they make them anymore (I should ask but don't have an FB account and their website seems down), Brian's seem fantastic but not sure about the 4140 steel.

Anything that Brian Otto makes will be an outstanding addition to your collection. He has made seven pieces for me over the years. Tools that actually see the field. All have performed flawlessly. Highest reccomendations.

Thanks a ton! They did seem pretty to my uninitiated eyes, but I will put everything I have to work, so the functional aspect, within reason of course, is important for me.

You sure DO have experience with his work, much appreciated!

I have a Fort Turner that I really enjoy, but I've read a lot of complaints about ordering from them. That being said, if I was to order another nice lightweight relatively inexpensive utility/camping hawk NOW, I'd be looking at H&B Forge.

If you want to step up in price a little bit, I'd check out Beaver Bill Forging Works' hammer poll, spike hawks, and belt & bag axes. He makes some gorgeous pieces that will last longer than either of us.

Thank you. You've given me some things to ponder on. Preparing my drool bucket - NOW.

Do you own pieces out of all these manufacturers, or are some based on outstanding reviews from other trusted sources?

I've talked personally with Beaver Bill about getting one of his pieces, but don't one one yet. H&B Forge's stuff seems to have been the go-to for good quality hand-forged offerings once Fort Turner started having issues, so it's based off of reviews.

The reviews did come from other bladeforum members in the Tomahawk section that have been good contributing members. I trust their opinions.

Most of my tomahawks are by H&B Forge, and most of those are custom pieces they made for me.

They're very well made and realistically priced. IMO you can't go wrong with them.
