Hello everyone,

I need a little help here. In terms of the machined FSH mags how do black paper, and g-10 compare in terms of grip purchase?

I have read some older threads about all kinds of grips but they were not consistent. Some people said the black paper was slick, others said sticky. I would like to get some opinions from people who have FSHs with both.

I have a nagging suspicion that I would like hand shaped canvas the best :)

For a big knife that may see some chopping action hand shaped canvas is my favorite. :D

It's not just the handle material you have to take into account, it's also the handle texture. I've got a CGFBM that has G10 handles that have a heavier texture compared to some of the canvas micarta blades I own. I have to wear gloves to use this FBM because it almost hurts the hand to grip it. Or I could probably sand it but it's a FBM and not a daily user to me.

Black paper has finer texture to it then canvas micarta so without a rough texture finish it will probably seem slightly more slippery in hand compared to G10.

Most of the hogs here prefer the micarta, and black paper is high on the list (so will probably cost a little more).

Black Paper is definitely smoother and IMHO slicker. I use to prefer G-10 hands down BUT one has to concider the enviroment you will be chopping/cutting in. I find if I'm in freezing rain and ice I go with G-10, when it's drier air I go canvas micarta and inside or close to home I like the paper micarta. One thing I know for a fact and that is in order of toughness of the 4 man made materials they fall into this order.
1) G-10
2) Canvas Micarta
3) Linen Micarta
4) Paper Micarta

Smooth Magnum Hand Shaped grips of Linen Micarta are the best for comfort and grip when chopping. You never need to do anything with them.

They always feel good in hand ....

Smooth black paper feels more slicker in the hand but is still able to be gripped well for chopping .... very comfortable also ....

Machined G10 has always needed smoothing off a little on the pattern for me .... just a little to take away the harsh edges for comfort when chopping by hand .... the same is true for machined pattern linen micarta as well ....

My G10 TTKZ was smoothed out a little and can now chop for hours without any bother .... the machined black paper on my NTTKZ also needed a little smoothing but not much .... these too are now very comfortable ....

All told I think smooth linen micarta is probably the best ... then black paper .... smoothed out if there is a machined pattern you like or totally smooth if you prefer ... then G10 smoothed out if there is a pattern .... it depends on what you prefer though as they all have a "tactile" feel to them which is different and will appeal differently I expect to others .... for me I am happy with them all if they are smooth enough not to give hot spots .... but if you don't want to mess about .... factory hand shaped linen micarta grips work the best out of the box.

The only FSH I have has canvas micarta so I can't directly compare but I have G10, Paper, Res-C, and other canvas micarta handles on other knives. I love the canvas micarta on my FSH and it is probably the most perfect knife I own, including the best handle of any large (8"-10") knife I've tried. I also love Res-C on my DF and Basic 11. G10 is great depending on the finish - some is a little rough and that's what I like - some is too smooth and can be slippery. Paper micarta is good too, I just like the slightly rougher feel of canvas better.
