Hi all,
Awhile back there was some discussion regarding New Year resolutions. Some folks were resolved to scaling back their collection, while others sought to grow theirs. I set myself a fairly reasonable goal (in my mind anyway) and that was to provide myself with, at the very least, one new knife each month. Now the initial goal was to focus particularly on traditional patterns as that is where my primary interests are. However, I still like modern knives and the knife for January happened to be a modern fixed blade that I had been eyeballing for awhile. Though, with that said, Jeff (rockgolfer) very generously gifted me a #53, which was a wonderful way to kickstart the New Year, so in a way, I can kind of consider it a January knife and it will get a little bit of spotlight in the pics below.
My plan is to update this thread with each monthly acquisition, introduce photographic evidence, and provide my thoughts regarding the newly acquired knife. Hopefully it will not be too much of a bore for you all.
February edition almost did not happen due to some recent unexpected travel expenses that cut rather deeply into the disposable income I had set aside for the month, which included the knife budget. This month I wanted to try the "Sodbuster" pattern and I had planned on picking up a nice Case Sodbuster or Sodbuster Jr, but due to the family loss that occurred, I was going to be resolved to picking up a Rough Rider or two. That way I could at least stick with my resolution and try the pattern but not fall outside my budget too far. The Mudbug sale came and went, much to my disappointment, but funds would not have allowed such an acquisition even if I had been aware of the production. However, the GEC Bullnose runs were still around so I took Bob's (BigBiscuit) suggestion and pulled the trigger on one in OD Micarta. It arrived today and I just picked it up a short time ago and snapped a bunch of pics.
Initial thoughts: It is smaller than I expected, and though it is not much different in size than the #53 I have, it feels lighter which lends itself to that perception, I suppose. The fit and finish are great, but then I am not a huge stickler for such things as long as the knife functions and does its job as designed. I love the OD Micarta scales, and overall I find the knife to be aesthetically pleasing. The pull is rather stiff, but I have tough nails so not much of a concern for me, the "walk-and-talk" is rather satisfying regardless. I kind of wished I had ordered one with the bail but I think the lanyard tube will suffice as I plan on putting a lanyard on it and keeping it in a pocket sheath of some sort.
All in all, very happy with it and am looking forward to putting it to work. Now for the pictures!
Package as it came in the mail. It was covered in a plastic wrap. Nothing a good sheepsfoot blade couldn't handle and it made short work of it.
Here is the #53 posing in front of its new pal.
There she is, in all her rugged glory.
A Bullnose straddling a bull's horn. Just had to...
A couple of side by side pics.
Hopefully I didn't bore you all with my show and tell. I am already planning the March edition, so we shall see what strikes my fancy...
