Hi all,

Awhile back there was some discussion regarding New Year resolutions. Some folks were resolved to scaling back their collection, while others sought to grow theirs. I set myself a fairly reasonable goal (in my mind anyway) and that was to provide myself with, at the very least, one new knife each month. Now the initial goal was to focus particularly on traditional patterns as that is where my primary interests are. However, I still like modern knives and the knife for January happened to be a modern fixed blade that I had been eyeballing for awhile. Though, with that said, Jeff (rockgolfer) very generously gifted me a #53, which was a wonderful way to kickstart the New Year, so in a way, I can kind of consider it a January knife and it will get a little bit of spotlight in the pics below.

My plan is to update this thread with each monthly acquisition, introduce photographic evidence, and provide my thoughts regarding the newly acquired knife. Hopefully it will not be too much of a bore for you all.

February edition almost did not happen due to some recent unexpected travel expenses that cut rather deeply into the disposable income I had set aside for the month, which included the knife budget. This month I wanted to try the "Sodbuster" pattern and I had planned on picking up a nice Case Sodbuster or Sodbuster Jr, but due to the family loss that occurred, I was going to be resolved to picking up a Rough Rider or two. That way I could at least stick with my resolution and try the pattern but not fall outside my budget too far. The Mudbug sale came and went, much to my disappointment, but funds would not have allowed such an acquisition even if I had been aware of the production. However, the GEC Bullnose runs were still around so I took Bob's (BigBiscuit) suggestion and pulled the trigger on one in OD Micarta. It arrived today and I just picked it up a short time ago and snapped a bunch of pics.

Initial thoughts: It is smaller than I expected, and though it is not much different in size than the #53 I have, it feels lighter which lends itself to that perception, I suppose. The fit and finish are great, but then I am not a huge stickler for such things as long as the knife functions and does its job as designed. I love the OD Micarta scales, and overall I find the knife to be aesthetically pleasing. The pull is rather stiff, but I have tough nails so not much of a concern for me, the "walk-and-talk" is rather satisfying regardless. I kind of wished I had ordered one with the bail but I think the lanyard tube will suffice as I plan on putting a lanyard on it and keeping it in a pocket sheath of some sort.

All in all, very happy with it and am looking forward to putting it to work. Now for the pictures!

Package as it came in the mail. It was covered in a plastic wrap. Nothing a good sheepsfoot blade couldn't handle and it made short work of it.

Here is the #53 posing in front of its new pal.

There she is, in all her rugged glory.

Hopefully I didn't bore you all with my show and tell. I am already planning the March edition, so we shall see what strikes my fancy...

Great looking Bull Nose and that #53 ain't no slacker either!

"Covered in a plastic wrap"? Hmmm, where on earth could you have gotten it from? (Don't answer that please, we already know):)

Thanks for the thread. I'm one of those resolution makers myself. I resolved not to buy any knives in 2017 and so far I've stuck to it. Perhaps I can live vicariously through your updates.

Keep it up Pàdruig. By the end of the year you will need a wide angle lens.

That is one slick knife! Hope I get a chance to pick one up! Little tight with money right now as am between jobs.

Daniel.

This is a great idea padruig. Love that Sod buster I just might have to go get one myself now. :D

What was the fixed you bought? Leave me a VM if you don't want to mention it here. Nice resolution btw
Thanks, Neal

Good on ya for sticking to your resolution. I know that not buying any knives would be especially difficult for me to stick to. In fact, I probably would be setting myself up for failure...:D In any case, I hope I can stick to my resolution, which will mean lots of pics to share with everyone.

Ha! You are probably right. I suppose there are worse problems to have with a growing collection. ;)

I highly recommend one! I certainly wish you the best on the job search though, hopefully you can land one very soon.

Both wonderful knives! Enjoy!

Thank you! And yes, knives in general are always a joy, but the new knife feeling is particularly awesome.

I highly recommend it. I am liking it more than I had originally anticipated.

I will leave a VM, Neal. Apologies for the late response, busy weekend.

I have been loving this Bullnose so far and with the nicer weather we have been getting lately, I hope to get out on a hike or two and get some action shots. Knives are best when used for their intended purpose, and this little lady is built to work. I will keep this thread updated accordingly.

Understand that Padruig! With a family it always is. :D Great idea for a thread , btw, if I haven't said so already. Looking forward to future installments. Good, smart choice with that soddie too, they are workhorses. Tah.
Thanks, Neal

Great idea for a thread Pàdruig, I'll be following this with interest.

My orange delrin Bullnose in O1 tool steel is one of my all time favourites, although I prefer the green micarta scales. I wish GEC would do some more models in O1.

I too will be following along. I like the idea and look forward to the next months decision and reveal!

Matt

Padruig-just wanted to say that if you make the modifications you mentioned to the fixed blade, it would probably be borderline acceptable here. I would check with a moderator first, but to me, it sounds as though you are making it traditional. $.02, worth what you paid.
Thanks, Neal
