Full damascus Coffin bowie with mammoth ivory - W.I.P

Hi everyone !

This week i just started an interesting project and i decided to take some pictures If everything goes well, at the end there should be so called coffin bowie. The picture is just a very simple draw of an idea . I have majority of the things in my had The customer gave me pretty free hand. He just demanded type of the knife (coffin bowie), full damascus , mammoth ivory on handle and Spanish notch. I decided to go for twisted W pattern. Well, life is to sort to make simple damascus patterns Just joking This will be pretty challenging for me and lot of things may came out pretty bad. So wish me luck friends ! We are starting !


First three days - damascus welding, blade grinding
I prepared two 2,2 kg (4,85 pounds ) billets . Just to be sure that i wont go short I will make another blade with rests, if there will be any. You can see how long was the billet after pulling it out it was like my leg .. almost 80 cm (31 inches) 30/10 mm (1,2/0,4 inch). For bad luck , batery in my camera died just before welding and i forgot to charge it another day:/ .. so i decidet to use pics of another twist i made few months ago . I dont have pictures from grinding blade either But as i can say the blade came out nicely, pattern looks pretty cool but for now i decided to show just a siluete of roughly grinded blade The notch needs bit more work to make it nice See you next time with another part. Here comes the second part - The guard

Hi everyone After couple more days i have a guard shaped more or less. It is made all by belt grinder, angle grinder and dremel . Now it is time to put it into perfect shape by hand, using sandpapers and diamond files. It is already quenched from start . It is full damascus twisted W pattern too as the blade is, but i wont show it until whole knife is finished . So what do you think ??

you are really off to a great start. The plan you drew looks wonderful. The profile of the blade came out just right. Now, the guard looks good. I am enjoying this.

Question, weren't a lot of the coffin handle bowies either full tang or frame handle?

Hi everyone : After some days of "cursing " and fitting all together nicely here comes the part 3

I already made the cage for the handle that is typical for this kind of knife. The spacers are damascus and the "wall" is carbon steel . All the parts are quenched on this knife to get the nice contrast on damascus. The service holes with the screws will be hidden beneath the scales To be continued ..

Hi everyone . I made rough grind on ending nut. I couldnt decided about the shape so i just grind it roughly and i will decide latter when i see it on the knife

Second part shows the scales fitting to the handle . Personally i find this part difficult for me . As im used to work mainly "from hand", hardly measuring anything and working just with my feeling this results bit harder for me With all those rivets every hole drilled and every angle has to be perfect .. if not it would look very disharmonical on the finished knife . I just wanted to make some tests so i made pair of "help scales" from oak Just to see if everything goes nicely . I just post these as i wan to concentrate when working the mammoth and not bother with camera see you with next one
