Has it been determined what year Buck introduced the Full Flap Holster Style sheath for their 100 series fixed blade knives?

Thanks, and best regards,

My notes say the full-flap was introduced in 1964; however, I could be wrong. DM will probably come along and verify this or give the correct year.

bertl, I checked my barrel nut models, the last ones having the red, hard fiber spacers. These are well documented to mid 1962 and all had the keeper strap with snap type sheath. I think this style sheath would have been used thru 62. Of my penned tang one line stamped models some had this sheath others had the flap over. And I didn't find the date noting this change in sheath in my notes. So, if your not correct, you've got to be close. DM

Looking through the catalogs on the BCCI web page, the 1965 catalog shows the 100 series with a flap sheath. The 1965 catalog supplement shows the "New Buck Holster Style Sheath" single for $4.00 and the combination for $5.00.

wildbillw,

Were you able to view a 1964 catalog? If you were, did it show the conventional sheaths with the knife retention straps? I am trying to determine what type of sheath would have come with a 119 purchased in 1964.

Thanks, and best regards,

What Cheer,

“In 1964 Buck introduced its new “Holster style” sheath. If your flat tang knife is in one of these sheaths, also known as a “Flapover style”, it was most likely made from late 1964 to 1967.” Joe Houser, BCCI Newsletter May 2001.

What Cheer:
There is not a 1964 catalog in the BCCI website listings. The catalogs go from 1962-63 to 1965. There is a 1964 catalog supplement and a 1964 franchise info. The 1964 supplement doues not show an illustration of a sheath, but the franchise info has a photo of the "flap over" sheath. Additionally, the "flap over" sheath was continually illustrated in the Buck catalog until 1979. Subsequent catalogs from 1979 to 1983 continued to reference the sheath as "genuine top grain saddle leather" but omitted an illustration of the sheath. In 1984 the "flap over" sheath illustration reappeared and was last shown in 1993.
