Thought I would share this picture of my older UBE with the full exposed tang and buffalo scales. I got this one when when Uncle Bill just put it up for a good sale price. I don't know if the newer ones have the full exposed tang(except at the pommel). The UBE was made by Royal Kami Bura from a Mercedes truck or bus spring.
Sorry for the poor picture but I just can't get my lighting just right.

And also the very nice buffalo skin sheath with the two smaller blades (one is called the Karda and I forgot what the burnisher was called):

That's a real nice one, Ron. Don't remember ever seeing a chiruwa UBE. Do you use yours much? I find that mine chops really well.

Aardvark,
I have never used mine at all. You called it a "chiruwa" but I am not familier with that term. When I got it from Uncle Bill he said it was a special shape made up just for him as a thanks for getting the company up and running.
I also have a 15" Ang Kola and a village suripati. Does a "chiruwa" have a full exposed tang instead of an enclosed rat-tail style of tang?

Thanks for your responce.

You pretty much nailed it: chiruwa is the name used to describe a handle that is made up of scales on either side of a fully-exposed tang, usually rivetted. There are other names for it.

Is that German beer the terrier is feasting on?

Yep, that sure is German Beer, at least what was left in the bottle after I was done drinking my fill. The Rat Terrier seems to prefer the imported real German beer to the local stuff :D ;)

Thanks for the information about the handle, I was not aware of that fact.

Yup, that's a Chiruwa UBE aka Uncle Bill Especiale. The tooled scabbard dates it back before Uncle Bill walked west.
The other name for a riveted on handle is Panna Butta but Chiruwa is easier and IIRC more accurate according to Uncle Bill but it's been a long time since the subject was discussed so I'm not really sure about which is the most accurate. :foot:

Methinks the Chiruwa handle is mostly a love/hate type of relationship, you either absolutely love it or you absolutely hate it. Personally I don't absolutely hate it but I sure don't care for them and much prefer the stick tang handles.:p ;) :)

Yes .. if I'm not mistaken .. the 1st UBE was made by Sonu and it was presented to Uncle Bill during one of the pooja sometime in in 2000 or 2001. I guessed Aunt Yangdu still have that very 1st UBE in her keeping. Uncle Bill always mentioned that he kept all those prized Khuks under his bed .. :) Mine is a lightweight version made by Bura. A Mint one. One of the Khuk that I never use.

I am greatful for all of the good information you have all given to me.
Mine was made by Bura (1/2 moon) but it is so heavy that I have never used it for any work.

Once again, thank you all for the info.

During Uncle Bill's last visit to his beloved Nepal and Kamis this Knife was given to him as a gift from Birgorkha shop Kamis. This knife was made by Sanu Kami who no longer works for shop. UBE Knife is very special to Uncle Bill and thought you might enjoy seeing it. (It is not for sale).

Yangdu, thanks for sharing that. It's VERY well done, isn't it? Especially the cho and bolster. Wish they would go back to that way of doing things. Love the frog, too.
